Holam or cholam (modern Template:Langx, Script error: No such module "IPA"., formerly <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />חֹלֶם‎, Script error: No such module "lang".) is a Hebrew niqqud vowel sign represented by a dot above the upper left corner of the consonant letter. For example, here the holam appears after the letter mem Template:Angle bracket‎: <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />מֹ. In modern Hebrew, it indicates the mid back rounded vowel, Template:IPAblink, and is transliterated as an o.

The mater lectionis letter which is usually employed with holam is vav, although in a few words, the letters Script error: No such module "lang". or Script error: No such module "lang". are used instead of Script error: No such module "lang".. When it is used with a mater lectionis, the holam is called holam male (<templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />חוֹלָם מָלֵא‎, Script error: No such module "IPA"., "full holam"), and without it the holam is called holam haser (<templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />חוֹלָם חָסֵר‎, Script error: No such module "IPA"., "deficient holam").

Appearance

If a holam is used without a following mater lectionis (vav, alef or he), as in <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />פֹּה‎ (Script error: No such module "IPA"., "here"), it is written as a dot above at the upper-left corner of the letter after which it is pronounced. Letter-spacing is not supposed to be affected by it, although some buggy computer fonts may add an unneeded space before the next letter.

File:Dor-Doar.svg
In the word <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />דֹּאר‎, the Biblical Hebrew spelling of the name Dor, the alef is a mater lectionis, and in traditional typography the holam is written above the Script error: No such module "lang".'s right arm. In the word <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />דֹּאַר‎ (Script error: No such module "IPA"., "mail"), the Script error: No such module "lang". is a consonant (a glottal stop), under which appears the vowel Script error: No such module "lang"., so the Script error: No such module "lang". is written above the previous letter's upper left corner. Not all fonts actually implement these placement rules, however.

If vav is used as a mater lectionis, the holam appears above the vav. If the mater lectionis is alef, as in <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />לֹא‎ (Script error: No such module "IPA"., "no"), it is supposed to appear above the Script error: No such module "lang".'s right hand, although this is not implemented in all computer fonts, and does not always appear even in professionally typeset modern books. This means a holam with Script error: No such module "lang". may, in fact, appear in the same place as a regular holam haser. If the alef itself is not a mater lectionis, but a consonant, the holam appears in its regular place above the upper-left corner of the previous letter, as in <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />תֹּאַר‎ (Script error: No such module "IPA"., "epithet").

If a holam haser is written after Script error: No such module "lang"., as in <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />לִגְוֺעַ‎ (Script error: No such module "IPA"., "to agonize"), it may appear above the Script error: No such module "lang"., or slightly farther to the left; this varies between different fonts. In some fonts, a holam merges with the shin dot (which appears on the upper-right corner of its letter seat), in words such as <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />חֹשֶׁךְ‎ (ḥṓšeḵ, Script error: No such module "IPA"., 'darkness') or with the sin dot, as in <templatestyles src="Script/styles_hebrew.css" />שֹׂבַע‎ (Script error: No such module "IPA"., 'satiation'). (These dots may or may not appear merged on your screen, as that depends on your device's Hebrew font.)

Usage

Holam male is, in general, the most common way to write the Script error: No such module "IPA". sound in modern spelling with niqqud. If a word has Holam male in spelling with niqqud, the mater lectionis letter Script error: No such module "lang". is without any exception retained in spelling without niqqud, both according to the spelling rules of the Academy of the Hebrew Language and in common practice.

The use of holam haser is restricted to certain word patterns, although many common words appear in them. In most cases the Academy's spelling rules mandate that the Script error: No such module "lang". will be written even when the spelling with niqqud does not have it. The normative exceptions from this rule are listed below. The Academy's standard is not followed perfectly by all speakers, and common deviations from it are also noted below.

In Biblical Hebrew the above rules are not followed consistently, and sometimes the Script error: No such module "lang". is omitted or added.[1]

Holam haser which is written as Script error: No such module "lang". in text without niqqud

Script error: No such module "For".

  • In words, in which the penultimate syllable has the vowel Script error: No such module "IPA". and is stressed (sometimes called segolate):
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('diameter') Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('radiance', Zohar), Script error: No such module "IPA".

    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('mail'), Script error: No such module "IPA". or Script error: No such module "IPA"..
Some people tend to spell some of these words without the Script error: No such module "lang"., e.g. Script error: No such module "Lang". instead of Script error: No such module "Lang"., although the Academy mandates Script error: No such module "Lang".. The tendency is especially strong when the words can be used as personal names.
  • When Kubutz is changed to holam before guttural letters in the passive binyan Pual due to tashlum dagesh (a vowel-change due to the inability of guttural letters to carry a dagesh):
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('fancy'), Script error: No such module "IPA".. Without niqqud: Script error: No such module "Lang"..
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('was explained'), Script error: No such module "IPA".. Without niqqud: Script error: No such module "Lang"..
  • In words which have the pattern /CaCoC/ in the singular and become /CəCuCCim/ with Kubutz in the plural, especially names of colors:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('orange'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('round'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"..
  • When the last letter of the root is guttural, holam haser is preserved due to tashlum dagesh:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('black'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"..
Without niqqud: Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"..
  • A similar pattern, in which the last letter of the root is not doubled in declension, has holam male in the base form, which is preserved in declension:
    • sg. Script error: No such module "Lang". ('big'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"..
  • In three words, a holam male is changed to a shuruk in declension:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('place of living'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".[2]
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('escape'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".;[3]

  • Similar to the above is the pattern /CəCaCCoC/, with reduplication of the second and third letters of the root:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('crooked'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA".. Without niqqud: Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"..
  • In the future, infinitive and imperative forms of most verbs in binyan Qal:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('I shall close'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "Lang". ('to close'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., Script error: No such module "Lang". ('close!'), Script error: No such module "IPA".. Without niqqud: Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"..
  • In words, whose roots' second and third letter are the same, in which case in declension the holam changes to Kubutz after which there will be a dagesh:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". all, Script error: No such module "IPA"., decl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". ('all of her'), root Script error: No such module "Lang".[5]
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('most'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., decl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA". ('most of him'), root Script error: No such module "Lang".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('drum'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"., root Script error: No such module "Lang".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('stronghold'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., pl. Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"., root Script error: No such module "Lang".
The standard spelling without niqqud for all of them except Script error: No such module "Lang". in construct state is with Script error: No such module "lang".: Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang".. Despite this, some people occasionally omit the Script error: No such module "lang". in some of those words and spell Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang". etc.
  • Several common words are spelled with a holam haser in the Bible, but the Academy mandates that they be spelled with holam male in modern Hebrew, among them:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('force'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('brain'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('a precious stone', in modern Hebrew 'diamond'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('very'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('suddenly'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
Some people still spell them without Script error: No such module "lang"., but the standard spelling is with Script error: No such module "lang"..[6]
  • The participle of most verbs in binyan Qal is often written with holam haser in the Bible, but always with holam male in modern Hebrew.
    • For example, in the Bible appear both Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang". ('seer'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., but in modern Hebrew only Script error: No such module "Lang"..

Holam with other matres lectionis

  • The most common occasion for not writing the Script error: No such module "IPA". sound as a Script error: No such module "lang". in text without niqqud is when in text with niqqud the mater lectionis is Alef (א) or He (ה) instead of Script error: No such module "lang".. In the Bible some words are irregularly and inconsistently spelled with ה as a mater lectionis:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". alongside Script error: No such module "Lang"., e.g. Script error: No such module "Lang". alongside Script error: No such module "Lang"., etc.
but the number of these irregularities was brought to minimum in modern Hebrew.
  • In the future forms of several verbs whose roots' first letter is Alef:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('you shall eat'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., root Script error: No such module "Lang"., without niqqud Script error: No such module "Lang"..
    • The prefix of the first person singular is itself Alef and in spelling with niqqud only one Alef is written: Script error: No such module "Lang". ('I shall say'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., root Script error: No such module "Lang"., and in spelling without niqqud a Script error: No such module "lang". is added: Script error: No such module "Lang".. This always happens in the roots Script error: No such module "Lang". ('perish'), Script error: No such module "Lang". ('wish'),[7] Script error: No such module "Lang". ('eat'), Script error: No such module "Lang". ('say'), Script error: No such module "Lang". ('bake') and less consistently in the roots Script error: No such module "Lang". ('love'), Script error: No such module "Lang". ('hold'), Script error: No such module "Lang". ('collect'), Script error: No such module "Lang". ('come').[7] In the root Script error: No such module "Lang". a holam male with Script error: No such module "lang". is used in the infinitive in Mishnaic and modern Hebrew:
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". Script error: No such module "IPA"..[8]
  • In the infinitive form of a small number of verbs whose roots' last letter is AlefScript error: No such module "Unsubst".: Script error: No such module "Lang". ('upon becoming full'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., root Script error: No such module "Lang"..[9]
  • In the following words the mater lectionis is always Alef (Script error: No such module "Lang".):
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('this' fem.), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('no'), Script error: No such module "IPA".[10]
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('scales'), Script error: No such module "IPA"., without niqqud Script error: No such module "Lang".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('wineskin'), Script error: No such module "IPA".[11]
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('sheep' or 'goats'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('head'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('left'), Script error: No such module "IPA".[12]
  • In the following words the mater lectionis is always He (Script error: No such module "Lang".):
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('such'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('here'), Script error: No such module "IPA".
    • Script error: No such module "Lang". ('where?'), Script error: No such module "IPA".[13]
  • In the absolute infinitive form of verbs which end in He: Script error: No such module "Lang". (Script error: No such module "IPA". 'to be'). This form is common in the Bible, but in modern Hebrew it is not productive and it is preserved only in fossilized sayings. For example, a common opening for fairy tales, Script error: No such module "Lang". ('there once was'), Script error: No such module "IPA". is written Script error: No such module "Lang". without niqqud.

Holam without vav in personal names

Some examples of usage of holam without Script error: No such module "lang". in personal names:

  • The names Pharaoh (Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "IPA".), Moshe (Script error: No such module "Lang".)[14] and Shlomo (Script error: No such module "Lang".)[15] are never written with Script error: No such module "lang".. Shilo (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is sometimes written with Script error: No such module "lang". in the Bible, but always with He in modern Hebrew. The adjectives Script error: No such module "Lang"., Script error: No such module "Lang". are written with Script error: No such module "lang". and with a nun in the suffix.
  • The name Aharon (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is spelled with holam haser in the Bible. In modern Hebrew both Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang". are used.
  • The name Noah (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is spelled with holam haser in the Bible, but it is sometimes written with the Script error: No such module "lang". in the Mishna[16] and in modern Hebrew.
  • Several other names of places and people are spelled with holam and Alef in the Bible include Yoshiyahu (Script error: No such module "Lang"., Josiah), Dor (Script error: No such module "Lang"., in modern Hebrew Script error: No such module "Lang".) and No Amon (Script error: No such module "Lang"., the Hebrew name of Thebes).
  • The word Script error: No such module "Lang". ('priest'), Script error: No such module "IPA". is spelled with holam haser in the Bible. It is a common Jewish last name, Cohen. The Academy mandates holam male for the noun Script error: No such module "Lang"., but allows the omission of Script error: No such module "lang". for spelling the personal name.[17]
  • Some personal names, such as Ohad (Script error: No such module "Lang".), Zohar (Script error: No such module "Lang".) and Nogah (Script error: No such module "Lang".), are sometimes spelled without Script error: No such module "lang". in modern writing without niqqud, although this varies from person to person.
  • God's name Adonai (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is written with holam haser to distinguish it from the word "Lord" (Script error: No such module "Lang".) used for humans.[18] When the Tetragrammaton is written with niqqud, it follows that of Adonai, so it is written with holam haser, too. For religious reasons writing Adonai and the Tetragrammaton is avoided in modern religious texts except in direct quotes from the Bible. They rarely appear in secular modern Hebrew texts and their spelling there is inconsistent.
  • The name Elohim (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is written with holam haser in the Bible, although its singular form Eloah (Script error: No such module "Lang".) is usually written with holam male. In modern Hebrew Elohim is a common word for "God" and it is usually spelled with the Script error: No such module "lang"., which is also the Academy's recommendation.

Vowel length comparison

These vowel lengths are not manifested in modern Hebrew. In addition, the short o is usually promoted to a long o in Israeli writing for the sake of disambiguation. As well, the short o (Script error: No such module "lang".) and long a (Script error: No such module "lang".) have the same niqqud. As a result, a Script error: No such module "lang". is usually promoted to Holam male in Israeli writing for the sake of disambiguation.
