French adverbs
Script error: No such module "Unsubst".Template:Template other Template:Expand French
Script error: No such module "Sidebar". Adverbs in French, like in English, are used to modify adjectives, other adverbs, and verbs or clauses. They do not display any inflection; that is, their form does not change to reflect their precise role, nor any characteristics of what they modify.
Formation
In French, as in English, most adverbs are derived from adjectives. In most cases, this is done by adding the suffix Script error: No such module "Lang". ("-ly") to the adjective's feminine singular form. For example, the feminine singular form of Script error: No such module "Lang". ("slow") is Script error: No such module "Lang"., so the corresponding adverb is Script error: No such module "Lang". ("slowly"); similarly, Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("happy" → "happily").
As in English, however, the adjective stem is sometimes modified to accommodate the suffix:
- If the adjective ends in an Script error: No such module "Lang"., then Script error: No such module "Lang". is added to the masculine singular (default) form, rather than to the feminine singular form:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("real" → "really")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("polite" → "politely")
- If the adjective ends in Script error: No such module "Lang". or Script error: No such module "Lang"., then the Script error: No such module "Lang". is stripped and Script error: No such module "Lang". is added:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("constant" → "constantly")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("recent" → "recently") (Script error: No such module "Lang". and Script error: No such module "Lang". have the same pronunciation: Script error: No such module "IPA".)
- Some adjectives make other changes:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("precise" → "precisely")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("nice" → "nicely")
Some adverbs are derived from adjectives in completely irregular fashions, not even using the suffix Script error: No such module "Lang".:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("good" → "well")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". ("bad" → "badly")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". (the adjective "better" → the adverb "better")
- traditionally, Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang". (the adjective "worse" → the adverb "worse") or more commonly, Script error: No such module "Lang". → Script error: No such module "Lang".
And, as in English, many common adverbs are not derived from adjectives at all:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("thus" or "this way")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("quickly")
Placement
The placement of French adverbs is almost the same as the placement of English adverbs.
An adverb that modifies an adjective or adverb comes before that adjective or adverb:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("completely true")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("not possible")
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("too well cooked" or "overdone")
An adverb that modifies an infinitive (verbal noun) generally comes after the infinitive:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("to walk slowly")
But negative adverbs, such as Script error: No such module "Lang". ("not"), Script error: No such module "Lang". ("not any more"), and Script error: No such module "Lang". ("never"), come before the infinitive:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". ("not to walk")
An adverb that modifies a main verb or clause comes either after the verb, or before the clause:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". or Script error: No such module "Lang". ("Slowly he began to walk" or "He began slowly to walk")
Note that, unlike in English, this is true even of negative adverbs:
- Script error: No such module "Lang". or Script error: No such module "Lang". ("Never have I done that" or "I have never done that")
