The labiodental flap Script error: No such module "IPA". is marginal, only occurring in two native Buwal words. The labial-velar plosives are also marginal; in particular, Script error: No such module "IPA". only occurs in one word, the ideophone Script error: No such module "Lang"..

Buwal has the vowels Script error: No such module "IPA"., which can occur in high, middle, or low tone. Each vowel has a variety of phonetic realizations. Script error: No such module "IPA". can occur as Script error: No such module "IPA"., and Script error: No such module "IPA". can occur as Script error: No such module "IPA".. The schwa can be analyzed as a solely epenthetic vowel. These vowels occur as rounded allophones when adjacent to a labialized consonant, and as front vowels when the word is palatalized.

Palatalization in Buwal occurs across an entire word, and also affects the affricate consonants Script error: No such module "IPA"., which surface as Script error: No such module "IPA". in a palatalized word. As a result, all of the vowels within a single word are either front or back, producing vowel harmony. An example of this contrast is between Script error: No such module "IPA". 'rat' (underlyingly Script error: No such module "IPA".), which is non-palatalized, and Script error: No such module "IPA". (underlyingly Script error: No such module "IPA".) 'turtle', which is palatalized. This process does not affect loanwords, e.g. Script error: No such module "IPA". 'oil' (from Fulfulde Script error: No such module "Lang".) or Script error: No such module "IPA". 'school' (from French Script error: No such module "Lang".). Some loanwords have been modified to accommodate Buwal phonology, e.g. Script error: No such module "IPA". 'tea', from Fulfulde Script error: No such module "Lang"..[2]
