Template:Infobox ethnonym Avatime, also known as Afatime, Sideme, or Sia, is a Kwa language of the Avatime (self designation: Script error: No such module "Lang". (m.sg.)) people of eastern Ghana. The Avatime live primarily in the seven towns and villages of Amedzofe, Vane, Gbadzeme, Dzokpe, Biakpa, Dzogbefeme, and Fume.

Phonology

Avatime is a tonal language with three tones, has vowel harmony, and has been claimed to have doubly articulated fricatives.

Vowels

Avatime has nine vowels, Script error: No such module "IPA"., though the vowels Script error: No such module "IPA". have been overlooked in most descriptions of the language. It is not clear if the difference between Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA". is one of advanced and retracted tongue root (laryngeal contraction), as in so many languages of Ghana, or of vowel height: different phonetic parameters support different analyses.[note 1]

Avatime has vowel harmony. A root many not mix vowels of the relaxed Script error: No such module "IPA". and contracted Script error: No such module "IPA". sets, and prefixes change vowels to harmonize with the vowels of the root. For example, the human singular gender prefix is Script error: No such module "IPA"., and the human plural is Script error: No such module "IPA".: Script error: No such module "IPA". "thief", Script error: No such module "IPA". "father"; Script error: No such module "IPA". "thieves", Script error: No such module "IPA". "fathers"; also Script error: No such module "IPA". "bee" but Script error: No such module "IPA". "god".[note 2]

Vowels may be long or short. Records from 1910Script error: No such module "Unsubst". showed that all vowels could be nasalized, but that is disappearing, and few words with nasal vowels remained by the end of the century.

The language has been claimed to have doubly articulated fricatives Script error: No such module "IPA".. However, as with similar claims for Swedish Template:IPAblink, the labial articulation is not fricated, and these are actually labialized velars, Script error: No such module "IPA"..Template:Sfn All velar fricatives are quite weak, and are more often Script error: No such module "IPA"..Template:Sfn

The affricates vary between Template:IPAblink, Template:IPAblink and Template:IPAblink, Template:IPAblink, which may be a generational difference.Template:Sfn

Phonotactics

Syllables are V, CV, CGV, and N: Avatime allows consonant-approximant clusters, where the approximant may be Script error: No such module "IPA".. There is also a syllabic nasal, which takes its own tone: Script error: No such module "IPA". "many".

Any consonant but Script error: No such module "IPA". may form a cluster with Script error: No such module "IPA".: Script error: No such module "IPA". "table", Script error: No such module "IPA". "snake", Script error: No such module "IPA". "chameleon", Script error: No such module "IPA". "mucous". After a coronal consonant, the Script error: No such module "IPA". is pronounced Script error: No such module "IPA"..

When two vowels come together, they are either separated by a glottal stop Script error: No such module "IPA"., fuse into a single vowel, or the first vowel reduces to a semivowel. In the latter case, the four front vowels reduce to Script error: No such module "IPA". and three of the back vowels reduce to Script error: No such module "IPA"., but Script error: No such module "IPA". is fronted to Script error: No such module "IPA"..

However, there are /Cw/ and /Cj/ sequences which are not derived from vowel sequences. These are Script error: No such module "IPA"..

Notes

  1. Since the IPA does not have distinct letters for ±ATR vowels, they are transcribed here as differing in height for legibility.
  2. Tone not marked. Other prefixes vary as Script error: No such module "IPA".
