Tibb's Eve

Template:Afc r

Tibb's Eve

In Newfoundland tradition Tibb's Eve, or December 23, marks the end of the long wait for the Christmas season. It is a time of anticipation and celebration at the end of the long fishing season.

A day or two before Christmas. A period when 'anything goes. It means, or meant once, a specified date, the day before Christmas Eve. Tipsy Eve, December 23rd. What a day! School is out. Christmas has begun... Though I'm only guessing, I've always assumed that the name Tipsy Eve originated from this custom of the men going from house to house on the afternoon of December 23rd to test or taste each other's brew. M 71-122 Christmas really starts in my home on Tipps Eve which is the day before Christmas Eve. I have heard that it is called Tipps Eve because when men used to put up their own homebrew etc. they wouldn't drink it before Christmas. 1974 GREEN 83 Nevertheless, the first of the twelve days at Christmas, December 23, was known locally by the picturesque name of 'Tipsey Eve' and there would always be a dance to go with the 'near beer' in somebody's kitchen.

Gareth Knapman (born 4th March 1981 Birmingham, England) is an English theatre actor and director, and a founding director of Ubiquity Theatre Company.

Career

Directly after finishing training at Birmingham (UK)'s Stage2 Theatre Company and getting his LAMDA acting diploma with honours, Gareth jobbed as an actor; director and workshop leader mainly in the West Midlands area of the UK. Companies he worked for include Gazebo Theatre; Bigfoot Theatre; Loud-Mouth Theatre; Purple Monster; EIL and Geese Theatre Company. Ubiquity's first venue-based performance was a stage-adaption of the 80's Bratpack film The Breakfast Club in Birmingham's Patrick Centre in the Birmingham Hippodrome. Subsequent performance projects have included re-workings of classic texts such as William Shakespeare's The Tempest; The Importance Of Being Ernest and The Dumb Waiter along with devised productions including Nomad No More in Leipzig, Germany and Heads Above Toes for Wolverhapton LEA. Internationally, Gareth and Ubiquity worked from 2002-3 in Vermont (USA) to direct and produce new pieces of theatre with a group of international actors (with funding from the [Experiment In International Living]). Gareth took sole control of Ubiquity in August 2004 and took it to Birmingham's partner-city of Leipzig (Germany) in early 2005, where they are now permanently based.
