Script error: No such module "Unsubst". In phonetics and phonology, a velar stop is a type of consonantal sound, made with the back of the tongue in contact with the soft palate (also known as the velum, hence velar), held tightly enough to block the passage of air (hence a stop consonant). The most common sounds are the stops Script error: No such module "IPA". and Script error: No such module "IPA"., as in English cut and gut. More generally, several kinds are distinguished:
- Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiceless velar plosive
- Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiced velar plosive
- Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiced velar nasal
- Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiceless velar nasal
- Script error: No such module "IPA"., velar ejective
- Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiced velar implosive (rare)
- Script error: No such module "IPA". or Script error: No such module "IPA"., voiceless velar implosive (unattested in normal words; some English speakers use it to imitate the "glug-glug" sound of liquid being poured from a bottle)
