Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of England Test wicket-keepers, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bruce French. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Castellology

Hi Dweller. I see that you are very much interested in castles. I have come across a couple of articles on castle & fortification terms which are translated literally from German. I am not an English native speaker, but have spent a lot of time reading and researching on the topic, both in English and German. What is very clear to me is that English castellology and German Burgenkunde have developed separately, and one positively cannot translate ad litteram terms from one language into the other. When this procedure is used to create enWiki articles, the result is not just funny or slightly off, but totally misleading, as the terms are either non-existent and non-native speakers are misled into learning and using them, or they do exist, but with a different meaning, and that is a deadly sin in an encyclopedia. The words might well be sometimes used together in a text, but without constituting an established term, and presenting them as such is a serious mistake. Can you please

  • a) take a look,
  • b) invite other editors from this field you might know, so that the decision is taken by a number of well-informed people; I am adding now Srnec and Dave souza already, and
  • c) if need be, delete the misleading articles? One can try and place the useful material into existing or new articles, I don't want people's work to be wasted, but neither are we allowed to mislead the users.

Here are the two examples, and I have a hunch that there are more, by the same very productive colleague: bridge castle and fortified gateway in the meaning of "Torburg" (I have modified the latter one the best I could). Please check also the two talk-pages, and my message to our hard-working friend. Thank you, Arminden (talk) 20:08, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I love castles, but haven't really devoted much time to them here - and don't have much time here for anything these days. While I readily understand the concepts and think they would be useful terms to have, I must say I've not come across either of these terms before, but that's not necessarily a problem. It's WP:RS that counts. If there's no notable term in English, we should probably host the articles at the German language names, and include a translation of the names. Does that help? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 20:50, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that's what I thought as well. Since it's not my main area here, I was hoping to pass the ball to "the usual suspects", but they're hard to make out. The German articles already exist, that's where our friend took everything from, so that's not the issue. Thank you and enjoy the spring! Arminden (talk) 00:28, 10 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Impressive work, the examples you've linked seem to be on the right track. The German analysis seems to define types which may have no English language equivalent, so what's been done looks useful as explaining something which occurs more in Continental Europe than in the UK and Ireland. Regrettably, it's outside my expertise, and I'm struggling to catch up with other projects at the moment. Hope these articles act as a starter, bringing in editors with the time and knowledge to develop coverage. . . dave souza, talk 11:40, 10 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. --Dweller (talk) Old fashioned is the new thing! 13:49, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks...

...for how you handled the BN discussion. I'm sure it makes me a fragile person, and opens me up to mocking comments from people who dislike me, but if I had been in Jake's shoes, I'm pretty sure I'd have said to myself: "yes, the community has changed since I was an admin; more than 50% of them have turned smug and casually cruel. I think I'll go volunteer my time somewhere else." (This, of course, would have been taken as proof I never really intended to re-engage.)

My concern is not that admins should be able to cling to an unused bit for a long time. I agree current requirements are inadequate, but they are the current requirements. My concern is someone has come along and volunteered to help out again, had a quite reasonable expectation (based on what he was told at the time he resigned and on the wording of current policy) that this was a routine request, and was basically shit on by many people for being a hat collector or arrogant or something. That is not how you re-engage returning volunteers. So I appreciate how you handled it professionally and politely. An unfortunate side-effect of JW's agreement is that the smug and casually cruel will consider this some kind of vindication. Feels like an icky place to be right now. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:14, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for kind words.

I am uncommonly proud of being an Arhg Kbiroaqrat. Although part of me wishes I was cool enough to be an aardvark.

More seriously, I really do care about the values I talk about in the link in my sig. We're not kind enough to one another. And, shockingly for a Crat, I feel that's more important than interpreting policy. Even better if I can find a way to make them not clash, which is what happened at BN today. That Jake agreed to my proposal is a credit to him - he didn't need to - and is I'm sure linked to the kind of person who is likely to have passed RfA in the first place, and we should be all too happy to welcome back into the fold of active users. But in any case, being polite and welcoming to all, admins, experienced non-admins and newbies alike, has always been my policy. --Dweller (talk) Old fashioned is the new thing! 22:25, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Mike Grose

File:Ambox warning pn.svg

<templatestyles src="Template:Quote_box/styles.css" />

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Script error: No such module "Check for unknown parameters".

A tag has been placed on Mike Grose requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello Dweller.

Following a discussion at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard, the minimum activity requirements for bureaucrats have been updated to also include the the recently updated minimum editing requirements for administrators (i.e. at least 100 edits every 5 years). This will be enforced beginning in January 2023. Should you no longer wish to volunteer as a bureaucrat you may request removal at SRP and.or let us know at WP:BN.

I nominated some old ones for TFA, - one was postponed (twice), one not yet taken, but some appeared, including Messiah (my first where two great masters included me for having taken things out, - one of them died, the other is cross with me, see Cosima Wagner which I want to nominate for her birthday in December). Proposed deletion of Covenant of the pieces

Notice

The article Covenant of the pieces has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Content duplicates the section Abrahamic covenant at Covenant (biblical). Both versions are poorly sourced (other than via primary religious literature), and as such, there is little call for an independent article on the topic.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the Template:Tlc notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing Template:Tlc will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I've addressed this by reverting back to an old diff. It's not in great shape, but it is at least specifically on-topic, rather than generic, which is what the article had become. Stockton Rush Career Section

FYI on this diff on Stockton Rush [1] you mentioned that a paragraph had been Template:Tq. I wanted to clarify in case you have any questions why things were changed; I think multiple edits might have been conflated here. I removed the block quote in [2], and indeed that is the only change in that diff besides replacing "he" with "Rush" in the first instance where he's mentioned in the section. The remainder of the career section was rewritten over the course of several edits by several editors; my contribution there came in [3] where my edit summary clearly states the intent as cleaning up some of the promotional language from the Smithsonian piece. I suspect between that and other edits it wound up looking like the paragraph had been deleted entirely. Happy to further clarify if there's any confusion! Template:User QAIbox Thank you today for Iwan Roberts, introduced (in 2020): "Something of a journeyman Welsh footballer, and certainly held in high esteem, nay legend status, by Norwich City supporters, the push on this article has been a joint effort between the two nominators, one of whom is not a Norwich supporter so was able to introduce some balance. It's been a long time in the making, we first started expansion around nine years ago, but we're hoping to finish the job properly and push it over the FAC line."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:38, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

2011

I'm having a somewhat nostalgic musical evening, and just listened to Rod Stewart's recording of 'I Don't Wanna Talk About It', and that reminded me that I always like to know exactly who played what, especially when done so beautifully, and that led me to this question of yours from 2011. Anyway, my thanks from then still stand, it's always good to be reminded of a great track. Hope you are well. DuncanHill (talk) 00:09, 21 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, DuncanHill, how lovely to hear from you. Wow, we've been here a long time, haven't we? I'm not that far short of my 20th anniversary here. Yes, it's a great song. I'm just a little bit obsessed by the cover of it by Everything but the Girl. If you haven't already, check it out, and while you're at it, check out their cover of The Only Living Boy in New York, too. They're not really a covers band, but those are tremendous tracks. --Dweller (talk) Old fashioned is the new thing! 09:10, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I remember EBTG well, not quite my scene, but fair play to them, they went for good songs. Which was the one that the sound failed on TOTP? When I was a very little boy there was a naval lieutenant who lived up the road, and served on HMS Ark Royal, at the time the TV series Sailor (TV series)|Sailor was on telly. One day the tv was wheeled into our room at school and we got to watch an episode with him in it! So I've always had a soft spot for Rod anyway. DuncanHill (talk) 00:39, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Suppressed edits on Louis DeJoy

Hey,

Noticed that you (or someone) suppressed some edits to Louis DeJoy - I had seen them in my watchlist and was going to do the same myself when I got the chance, so thanks for beating me to the punch. However, did you notice anything of value in those edits? I thought (based on little more than a glance) that there could've been something there worth saving, but I'm not sure.
