It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Northern Savonia region. The municipality has a population of Template:Data Finland municipality/population count (Error: Invalid time.),[1] making it Northern Savonia's least populous municipality. It covers an area of Template:Convert of which 30%, or Template:Convert, is water.[2] The population density is Template:Convert.

Neighbouring municipalities are Keitele, Kuopio, Maaninka, Pielavesi, Rautalampi, Suonenjoki, and Vesanto. Summer cottages are as prevalent as households. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
