The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) is a prominent American professional society that consists of physicians who are actively engaged in research and teaching within the field of internal medicine. The society's roots trace back to its initial naming as "The Society for Research and Education in Primary Care Internal Medicine" (SREPCIM),[1] established during its inaugural meeting held in 1978. This gathering marked a significant milestone for physicians focused on advancing the practice of primary care internal medicine through education and research initiatives. The organisation received vital startup funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which was awarded to the American College of Physicians to support this important endeavor. Over the years, as the focus and mission of the organisation evolved, it underwent a name change in 1988 to become the Society of General Internal Medicine(SIGM). This renaming reflected its broader commitment to internal medicine as a whole, emphasising the critical role that research and education play in improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes in the field.By 2012, SGIM had over 3400 members.
