The village name is an Old English language word, and means 'Farm or settlement connected with Scira'.[2] In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was recorded as Serintone.[3]

The parish church dates from the mid-13th century and is a Grade I listed building,[4] dedicated to Saint Laud.

A bowl barrow (a prehistoric burial mound) at the eastern edge of the village is a scheduled monument.[5]

Twin village

The village is twinned with Sameon in France.[6]
