Use among Vishwakarma community

Some members of the Vishwakarma community, traditionally known as divine craftsmen and engineers in Hindu texts, also use the surname "Sharma" as a spiritual and cultural identifier.

According to the Yajurveda (Adhyaya 4, Mantra 9), the word "Sharma" is directly used in a mantra addressing those engaged in Shilpakala (divine craftsmanship), recognizing them as providers of peace and spiritual refuge. This has been interpreted to include Vedic artisans and Brahmins within the Vishwakarma lineage who served priestly roles and were proficient in both ritual and technical knowledge.
