In the 960s the area became part of Poland after Mieszko I defeated the local Slavic tribes. The area became German-speaking as the result of Ostsiedlung. During the Thirty Years' War, the settlement fell under control of the Swedish Empire by stayed part of Germany. Later on, within Germany, it passed to Prussia.
