The Raptisagar Express trains are currently two sets of Express trains which run tri-weekly/weekly between Kochuveli/Ernakulam Junction and Gorakhpur/Barauni in India. It was inaugurated as 5012/5011 Gorakhpur - Cochin Harbour Terminus - Gorakhpur RaptiSagar Express running on 4 days while a Bi-weekly service was going to Hyderabad as 5090/5089 Gorakhpur - Hyderabad Express(now 12590/12589 Secunderabad - Gorakhpur - Secunderabad). Later, one day run of 5011/12 was extended to Barauni as 5222/5221(now 12522/12521 Ernakulam - Barauni - Ernakulam RaptiSagar Express)and one day run of 5090/89 was extended to Bangalore(Bengaluru) as 5092/5091(now 12592/12591 Yesvantpur - Gorakhpur - Yesvantpur Express). The train numbers were swapped when these trains were upgraded as Superfast and 12511/12512 was extended to Trivandrum is early 2000's. This train goes via the cities of Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Thrissur, Palakkad, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Chennai Central, Vijayawada, Khammam, Warangal, Ramagundam, Nagpur, Bhopal, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Gonda and Basti. The current operator of the train is North Eastern Railway zone/East Central Railway zone of Indian Railways. It is the 10th longest train service of Indian Railways.

Both trains run more than 3200 km per service.

Name of the train

The name "Raptisagar" is given to the train as the train connects the cities Thiruvananthapuram/Cochin which is situated near the Arabian Sea and Gorakhpur/Barauni from where Rapti river flows.

Coach composition

Both sets of trains have 22 coach cars which includes First AC, AC 2 tier, AC 3 tier, AC 3 tier economy (only on 12521/12522), Sleeper, General Sitting (Unreserved), and Pantry Car.

Schedule

12511 – Starts from Gorakhpur Junction every Sunday, Tuesday and Friday at 6:35 hrs and reaches Kochuveli on Day 3 at 17:20 hrs.

12512 – Starts from Kochuveli every Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:15 hrs and reaches Gorakhpur Junction on Day 3 at 15:20 hrs

12521 - Starts from Barauni every Monday at 22:51 hrs and reaches Ernakulam Junction on Day 3 at 11:30 hrs.

12522- Starts from Ernakulam Junction every Friday at 10:50 hrs and reaches Barauni on Day 3 at 00:05 hrs.

Both sets of trains reverse at MGR Chennai Central.

The trains have an average speed of about 58 km/h during its journey.
