History

Nitro Software was founded in Melbourne, Australia, by a team of three. The company developed PDF software as an alternative to Adobe Acrobat.[3]

In 2015, the company had sold 1 million licenses. In 2018, it introduced the Nitro Productivity and eSigning Suite.[3]

As of 2018, Nitro PDF Pro was utilized by over 650,000 businesses.[4]

In June 2021, the company acquired PDFPen, a PDF editing app for Mac, iPad, and iPhone.[5]

In May 2025, the company sent a letter to all owners of perpetual licenses older than version 13, informing them that their previously lifetime license will be deactivated unless they 'upgrade' to a subscription model.[6]

As of June 2025, Nitro Software is graded F by the Better Business Bureau for the company's failure to respond to customer complaints.[7]

Products

Nitro Software offers a PDF editor, a browser-based application for electronic signatures, and various PDF productivity tools. Subscription services feature cloud-based user management, deployment, and analytics tools. The company also manages several document conversion websites.

Nitro Software's desktop products are compatible with Windows and Mac. Nitro Cloud operates in web browsers on most devices. Nitro PDF Pro is available as proprietary trialware, and Nitro Reader is available as freeware for both personal and professional use.
