NGC 5579 is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the northern constellation of Boötes. It was discovered on May 1, 1785) by German-British astronomer William Herschel.[1] The galaxy is located at a distance of Script error: No such module "convert". from the Milky Way, and is receding with a heliocentric radial velocity of Script error: No such module "val"..[2] It is entry 69 in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies.[3]

On Dec. 17, 2006, a supernova designated SN 2006ss was discovered Script error: No such module "val". north and Script error: No such module "val". east of the galactic center.[4] It was determined to be a type IIb supernova based on the spectrum.[5]
