Muhammad I (Muḥammad bin ʿAbdallāh[1]) was the mai of the Kanem–Bornu Empire in 1328–1329.[1]
Life
Muhammad was the son of Abdullah II and Kagala.[2] He succeeded his brother Kuri II Kura as mai[2] in 1328,[1] after Kuri Kura's death in battle against the Sao.[3][4] The Sao lived south of Lake Chad[4] and had been greatly reduced, but not wiped out or completely subjugated, under earlier mais. The Sao had risen up against the empire in the time of Selema, also Muhammad's brother, and also killed by the Sao.[3] Muhammad became the fourth and final of Abdullah II's sons to die fighting the Sao after a short reign.[3][4] With Abdullah II's sons extinguished in the wars against the Sao, the throne passed to Idris I, son of Ibrahim I Nikale.[2][3]
