Lophiodon (from Template:Langx Script error: No such module "lang"., 'crest' and Template:Langx Script error: No such module "lang". 'tooth')[1] is an extinct genus of mammal related to chalicotheres.[2] It lived in Eocene Europe 52 to 38 million years ago,[2] and was previously thought to be closely related to Hyrachyus.[3][4] Lophiodon was named and described by Cuvier (1822) based on specimens from the Sables du Castrais Formation.[5] There are various species of Lophiodon known to have existed throughout Eocene Europe, where they were the largest herbivorous mammals in the region.[6]
