Overview
Harian Metro is a Malaysian daily newspaper published in Malay by New Straits Times Press (NSTP). Launched on 26 March 1991 as Malaysia's first afternoon Malay-language tabloid, it initially served the Klang Valley before expanding nationally as a morning paper.[1] The tabloid underwent significant editorial shifts in 2006 to target younger urban audiences, introducing entertainment and lifestyle content.[2] A redesign on 17 July 2006 added sections like "Rap" (music) and "Variasi" (lifestyle), followed by the 11 April 2009 introduction of pullouts "GIGS" (entertainment) and "EKSTRA" (current affairs), alongside a price adjustment.[3]
Circulation

Ownership
Published by New Straits Times Press, a subsidiary of Media Prima,[7] the newspaper remains part of Malaysia's largest media conglomerate.
History
1990s
Harian Metro, Malaysia's first afternoon Malay-language newspaper, launched on 26 March 1991 at RM0.50 per copy under founding news editor Mior Kamarul Shahid.[8] Its first redesign followed on 26 June 1991. Ahmad Puad Onah became editor in 1992, overseeing regional expansions: a southern edition (Johor Bahru, 25 March 1992), an East Malaysia edition (16 May 1994), and a northern edition (1 August 1994).[9] Zain Johari succeeded as editor on 1 April 1994, preceding the launch of weekend supplement Metro Ahad on 29 August 1995.[10]
2000s
The newspaper adopted the tagline "Kini, Sini, Terkini" (Now, Here, Latest) during a 17 July 2000 redesign, with Metro Ahad revamped six days later.[11] By 2003, Metro Ahad reached 1.07 million readers.[12]
Key developments included:
- 2004: Launch of websites (27 January), Hafifi Hafidz's appointment as executive editor (1 June),[13] and new sections ("Liku-liku Niaga" business column on 27 July; "Bintang & Variasi Metro" pullout on 23 August).
- 2005: Price increases to RM1.20 (Peninsular Malaysia) and RM2.00 (East Malaysia).[14]
- 2006: Interactive portal i-Metro launched (6 June);[15] layout overhaul introducing celebrity/lifestyle sections (15 July).[16]
- 2009: New pullouts ("GIGS" on 12 April; "AYU" on 9 October) and another price adjustment (RM1.50 in Peninsular Malaysia, RM2.30 in East Malaysia).[17]
2010s
Expansion to East Malaysia began on 3 May 2010, with a dedicated 64-page Sabah/Sarawak edition (RM1.50) launched in Kuching on 23 May.[18] The 2013 rebranding shortened "Rentak Artis Popular" to "RAP",[19] while a 2019 redesign renamed the weekend section "RapXtra".[20]
2020s
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Harian Metro intensified health crisis coverage and digital distribution. It published government guidelines,[21] launched pandemic-focused digital content,[22] and featured community resilience stories.[23]
