Fogo Natural Park (Template:Langx) is a protected area located on Fogo Island in Cape Verde, an archipelago nation in the central Atlantic Ocean. Established in 2003, the park encompasses an area of Template:Cvt, representing 17.8% of the island's total landmass. It is geographically distributed across the municipalities of Santa Catarina do Fogo, Mosteiros, and São Filipe. The park's central feature is the active stratovolcano Pico do Fogo, along with its caldera (Chã das Caldeiras) and crater rim (Bordeira), as well as the Monte Velha forest. The natural park is vital for both its unique geological features and its biodiversity, particularly for endemic plant species and as an Important Bird Area. The volcano's eruptions, most recently in 2014-2015, have significantly shaped the landscape and influenced the lives of the communities living within the caldera.
Geography
Fogo is a protected area located on Fogo Island in Cape Verde, an archipelago nation in the central Atlantic Ocean.[1] Fogo Natural Park was officially established on 24 February 2003, as one of Cape Verde's ten natural parks.[2] The protected area is Script error: No such module "convert"., which is 17.8% of the total area of the island.[3][4] About 50% of the park lies within the municipality Santa Catarina do Fogo, 28% in municipality of Mosteiros and 22% in São Filipe.[1] The natural park is situated in the interior of the island, and the topography of Fogo Natural Park is dramatically shaped by its active stratovolcano, Pico do Fogo, which is the highest point in Cape Verde, rising to Template:Cvt above sea level.[5] The park covers the volcano, its crater and crater rim (Bordeira) and the forest of Monte Velha. The volcano is active, and the island of Fogo itself has a long history of volcanic activity, with significant eruptions recorded in 1680, 1725, 1857, 1951, 1995. The most recent eruption was in 2014-15, and have significantly shaped the landscape of the region.[6][7] The caldera itself is approximately Template:Cvt wide and has a breach in its eastern rim, allowing lava flows to reach the coast during eruptions.[8]
Flora and fauna
The volcano area of Fogo is an Important Bird Area. Key bird species are Fea's petrel, Boyd's shearwater and Cape Verde swift.[9] The ocean around the island of Fogo is another Important Bird Area covering Script error: No such module "convert"..[10] The endemic plants Echium vulcanorum (endangered)[11] and Erysimum caboverdeanum (critically endangered)[12] are only found on the outer crater rim of the volcano of Fogo.[9]
