Its official name is West Frisian, the Dutch name is Ferwerderadeel (Script error: No such module "IPA".). In 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Dongeradeel and Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland to form the new municipality Noardeast-Fryslân.
