Digi International, Inc. is an American Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technology company based in Hopkins, Minnesota.[1]

History

The company was founded in 1985[2] and went public as Digi International in 1989.[3]

The company initially offered intelligent ISA/PCI boards (the 'DigiBoard') with multiple asynchronous serial interfaces for PCs.[2]

Today, multiport serial boards are still sold, but the company focuses on embedded and external network (wired and wireless) communications, scalable USB products, radio modems and embedded modules based on LTE (4G) communications platforms.Script error: No such module "Unsubst".

Patents

Digi International settled a patent infringement lawsuit with U.S. Ethernet Innovations LLC for $1.525 million in April 2013.[4]

In 2022, NimbeLink, a subsidiary of Airgain, filed a lawsuit alleging certain Digi products infringed on NimbeLink's Skywire cellular modems.[5] The U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota found all patent claims by Nimbelink to be invalid in May 2024.[6][5]

Digi XBee®

The Digi XBee ecosystem includes a family of pre-certified wireless modules and development tools that support protocols such as Zigbee®, LTE-M, NB-IoT, Bluetooth®, DigiMesh, Wi-SUN, Wi-Fi, and LoRaWAN® in through-hole, surface-mount, and micro form factors. Digi XBee modules support mesh networking, point-to-multipoint communication, and long-range transmission built on XBee code libraries for ARM Mbed, ANSI C, Java, Python, MicroPython and third party code libraries of Arduino and Node — with optional support for Digi Remote Manager® for remote configuration and monitoring.

Digi ConnectCore®

Digi ConnectCore is a complete system-on-module (SOM) platform built on processors such as NXP i.MX 6, i.MX 8, and STMicroelectronics architectures. These SOMs include integrated connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet), secure boot, device management, and long-term software support through Digi Embedded Yocto Linux and the Digi TrustFence® security framework. ConnectCore modules are designed for medical-grade and industrial-grade applications and are supported by comprehensive development tools, carrier boards, and cloud integration.

Digi X-ON®

Digi X-ON is an integrated solution with certified wireless connectivity for sensors and end-nodes to integrate into a cloud-ready LoRaWAN system. It includes a gateway for indoor or outdoor use for carrier-grade coverage in public and private networks.

Digi AnywhereUSB®

Digi AnywhereUSB Plus is a family of USB-over-IP devices that allows USB peripherals to be connected to a PC or virtual machine over a network. Available in rack-mountable and compact form factors, AnywhereUSB is widely used in industries like retail, manufacturing, and finance where centralized management and secure remote connectivity are critical.

Digi Connect® EZ

Digi Connect EZ is a serial device server family that provides modern, secure connectivity for legacy serial equipment. It supports RS-232/422/485 communication, advanced encryption, and out-of-band (OOB) management. The devices are configured using an intuitive web interface or Digi Navigator™, and they integrate with Digi Remote Manager® as well.

Digi Connect® Sensor XRT-M

The Digi Connect Sensor XRT-M is a battery-powered, industrial-grade cellular gateway designed for remote sensor monitoring. Supporting MQTT for messaging, it enables direct communication from field sensors to platforms like Digi Axess and MQTT brokers. Key applications include water management, green stormwater infrastructure, tank and gas distribution monitoring, mining, and environmental compliance. Opengear, a Digi Company

Opengear, a Digi International company, provides out-of-band management, automation, and network resilience solutions for data centers, branch offices, and remote sites.

  • Out-of-Band Management: Opengear appliances enable access to routers, switches, servers, and power systems via an alternate management path (typically cellular or secondary Ethernet).
  • Lighthouse Management Software: Lighthouse is Opengear’s centralized orchestration and automation platform that provides visibility, control, and configuration management across distributed infrastructure. Ventus builds and manages cellular networking solutions tailored to retail, financial services, healthcare, QSR, energy, and other multi-site industries for POS, Kiosks, vending, EV charging, IoT, ATMs, digital signage, access control, wireless wide-area-networks, network failover and remote location services. SmartSense by Digi

SmartSense by Digi is a division of Digi International focused on real-time condition monitoring and compliance automation for critical infrastructure across industries such as healthcare, food service, retail, transportation, and education. The SmartSense platform combines wireless sensors, gateways, cloud-based dashboards, and advanced prescriptive analytics to provide continuous visibility into operations that require precise environmental control and regulatory compliance.

Key Capabilities of SmartSense:
