Courléon (Script error: No such module "IPA".) is a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France. It is part of the arrondissement of Saumur and the canton of Longué-Jumelles. The commune is known for its rural landscape, agricultural activity, and historic religious architecture.[2]
Geography
Courléon is located in the northern part of the Maine-et-Loire department, near the border with the Indre-et-Loire department. It lies approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Saumur and about 60 kilometers west of Tours. The commune covers an area of around 14.03 square kilometers.[2]
Population
As of 2021, Courléon had a population of 277 inhabitants, according to the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE).[2]
Administration
The commune is governed by a mayor and a municipal council. As of the 2020–2026 term, the mayor is Philippe Gouet.[3] Courléon is part of the intercommunality known as the Communauté d'agglomération Saumur Val de Loire.
History
Courléon has existed since at least the medieval period. The village's name is believed to derive from a Gallo-Roman estate. The local church, the Église Saint-Hilaire, dates back to the 12th century and reflects Romanesque architectural styles.[4]
Economy
The economy of Courléon is largely based on agriculture, particularly livestock farming and crop cultivation. The commune also engages in forestry and small-scale viticulture as part of the larger wine-producing region of the Loire Valley.[5]
