According to the 2014 census, Căușeni had a population of 15,939 inhabitants.[6] There was a decrease compared to the previous census in 2004, when 17,757 inhabitants were registered. Of these, 7,606 were men and 8,333 were women.[7] The population is further projected to reduce over the next few decades.[8] The city had a Human Development Index of 0.699 in 2015.[8] About 2,753 inhabitants were under the age of fourteen, and 1,592 inhabitants were above the age of 65 years.[9] The entire population lived in urban areas. The town had an expatriate population of 961 individuals, of whom 68 belonged to the European Union, 878 belonged to the Commonwealth of Independent States, and 15 belonged to other nations.[9]
Moldovans formed the major ethnic group (81.3%), with Romanians (7.5%), Russians (5.0%), and Ukrainians (3.0%) forming a significant minority.[10] The town had a significant Jewish population before the Second World War.[5] Moldovan language was the most spoken language, spoken to by 8,842 (58.6%) inhabitants, with Russian and Romanian spoken by significant minorities.[9]
Footnotes:
* There is an ongoing controversy regarding the ethnic identification of Moldovans and Romanians.
* Moldovan language is one of the two local names for the Romanian language in Moldova. In 2013, the Constitutional Court of Moldova interpreted that Article 13 of the constitution is superseded by the Declaration of Independence,[11] thus giving official status to the name Romanian.[12][13]
