The Batumi Mosque (Georgian: Script error: No such module "Lang"., batumis mecheti, orta jame[1]) is a mosque in Batumi, Adjara, Georgia, which is a home to a sizable Muslim community. The mosque is popularly known as the "Jamia in the middle" ("ორთა ჯამე", orta jame) for it once stood in between two other mosques which have not survived.[2]

History

The mosque was commissioned by the family of Aslan Beg (the equivalent of a duke) Khimshiashvili, a Muslim Georgian nobleman in 1866.[3] In 1946, the mosque was renovated, in which a year, a square and minaret were added to the mosque building and its surroundings. The mosque was closed during the Soviet Union era and used as a military warehouse.[4] In the 1990s, another renovation was carried out at the mosque, in which a minaret and garden were added in 1995. The mosque was subsequently reopened.[5]

Architecture

The mosque was designed with Ottoman architecture. It has a golden dome and white minarets. The windows of the building are arranged in two layers. It has wooden roof. The walls of the mosque were painted by the Laz brothers.[6]
