The Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the North-East Region of Singapore. It it divided into 5 wards: Teck Ghee, Buangkok–Fernvale South, Seletar–Serangoon, Cheng San and Ang Mo Kio–Hougang, managed by Ang Mo Kio Town Council. The current Members of Parliament are Lee Hsien Loong, Darryl David, Nadia Ahmad Samdin, Jasmin Lau and Victor Lye from the People's Action Party (PAP).

History

Prior to the 1997 general election, the GRC was expanded to five members from the four it had when it was created for the 1991 general election.[1][2] For the 2001 general election, it was expanded again to six members as it absorbed two wards from the former Cheng San GRC.[3]

During the 2006 general election, the GRC was considered a battleground as it faced its first electoral contest since its creation; a group of Workers' Party (WP) Gen X candidates led by Yaw Shin Leong was contesting against the PAP.[4] Lee, the PAP anchor and then-Prime Minister, called the WP team a "suicide squad", with the WP team responding by claiming that they were not pushovers.[5] Eventually, the PAP won the GRC with 66.14% of the vote to the WP's 33.86%, slightly lower than the PAP's 66.6% of the national vote.

During the 2011 general election, where there was a national swing against the PAP, the PAP team won with 69.33% of the vote against the Reform Party (RP), the highest among all GRCs and higher than the overall national average of 60.14%.[6]

Before the 2020 general election, the GRC was shrunk to five members with the abolition of six-member GRCs at that election with Yio Chu Kang division being carved out as a SMC; the PAP defeated the RP with 71.91% of the vote.[7][8]

During the 2025 general election, the GRC saw its first three-way contest between the incumbent PAP, the People's Power Party (PPP) and the new Singapore United Party (SUP).[9] The PAP team, led by Lee, now the Senior Minister with Nadia Ahmad Samdin and Darryl David remaining in the team while Ng Ling Ling and Gan Thiam Poh retired from politics (as their wards are carved out into the new Jalan Kayu SMC) and were replaced by new face Jasmin Lau and ex-Aljunied candidate Victor Lye.[10][11] The PAP team won the contest with almost 79% of the vote; the other two parties received around 10% each.[12] For failing to secure at least 12.5% of the vote, both PPP and SUP forfeited their election deposits.[12]

Constituency profile

The constituency encompasses the majority of Ang Mo Kio (Teck Ghee, Cheng San, portions of Yio Chu Kang), Seletar Hills, the northern half of Serangoon North, a portion of northern Hougang and a portion of Sengkang; specifically, Sengkang Depot and the south of Fernvale. It is served by the MRT stations of Yio Chu Kang and Ang Mo Kio in the west, and the LRT stations of Layar and Fernvale on the Sengkang LRT line in Fernvale.
