- ↑ Mathews derived much of the book from A Dictionary of American English on Historical Principles edited under the direction of Sir William Craigie at the University of Chicago (1934–1944). Its 1911 pages of entries provides an important view of American culture as it evolved from its beginnings to the mid-20th century. "Made in U.S.A.", Time magazine. April 02, 1951.
