Wiki143:WikiProject Museums

Template:Short description {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Museums/Navigation}} Template:WikiProject status

Welcome to the Museums WikiProject! A chunk of this text has been stolen borrowed under GFDL ;) from other Wiki Projects.

Goals

• Improve Wikipedia's coverage of museums.
• Improve quality of existing articles
• Expand smaller museums in non-English dominant countries where articles are little more than a sentence.
• Create guidelines for articles about museums.

Scope

• The project covers all articles about museums in a wide range of disciplines and locations throughout the world. By member consensus, it does not include aquaria, herbaria, zoos and other non-museum 'collections' because these are well-covered in other projects.
• For those within the museum sector, and collaborations between Wikipedia and institutions, see Wikipedia:Advice for the cultural sector.

To Do

• Wikipedia:WikiProject Museums/Requested Articles: these articles have been requested, but not yet written
• Wikipedia:WikiProject Museums/Requests for Expansion: these stubs have been created, but they could do with some expansion

Ongoing cleanup

There is an ongoing cleanup/developing in the undeveloped stub articles of Category:Museums in Greece to determine which of them meet with notability standards, develop them to at least basic stubs and nominate for deletion all the rest. You can help here. Participants: User:Thaliapap, User:Hoverfish

Articles needing tagging

A Bot/user using AWB is helping generate a list of articles that are in one or more of the museum subcats but not tagged for WP:Museum. Any help is welcome going through the list & removing those that shouldn't be tagged & tagging those that should. If there's a large list, it may be possible for a bot to work through the list

Resources

Some resources which may be useful for those writing articles about museums:

• Culture24 – information on many UK museums
• Visitor statistics for UK attractions
• Monthly museum & gallery visits figures from the UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport
• Geograph (for photos in the UK) is really good & all CC licensed so can be used – there is even a simple template {{geograph | image-number | author}} for adding them on upload which marks them for transfer to commons.
• Museums: Virtual Library museums pages (VLmp)
• MuseumRegister | an international directory of museums in all categories
