Wiki143:WikiProject Islam/Mosques task force

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a task force of WikiProject Islam.

Mission objectives

To organise all mosque articles in a consistent fashion. More precisely:

  • Agree on a consistent format for mosque article titles.
  • Include basic info. on a mosque at the start of each mosque article (usually in a template - maybe infobox?). This has already been done for many mosque articles, but the task is by no means complete.
  • Template:Tlx is added to the top of the talk pages of any articles relevant to this project. This will make them appear on the Category:Mosques task force articles.

Top of my head generic tasks

  • Populate the subcategories of Category:Mosque-related articles by quality with all mosque related articles by adding the above talk page template.
  • Add basic info. templates to all mosque articles.
  • Update mosque categories.
  • Standardise mosque article titles (e.g. Masjid al-Haram and Al-Aqsa Mosque appear inconsistent); there may be issues here with the most common English term for any given mosque.
  • Create 'Mosques in ...(name of country)' templates for each country.
  • Add quality and importance notices on talk pages of all mosque articles (not just those which describe the mosque, but any article whose main content is about mosques - e.g. Siege of Lal Masjid); update the corresponding Mosque articles by quality table. See here for assistance.
  • Get a photo of each mosque for which there is an article - I know this isn't necessarily very easy.

Articles needed

Unresolved issues and standardisation

There are presently many inconsistencies in mosque articles, many concerning standardisation.

  • If not at the beginning of a sentence, should al- or Al- be used (as in al-Aqsa)?
  • Should all known mosques be listed or just the notable ones ? I prefer the former option, but I can see that articles on local, small mosques will probably be quite stubby.
  • Change name of Masjid-e-Aqsa (Not The Aqsa) - this one is an Ahmadiyyah mosque in Pakistan! - to something else ?
  • Some mosques use Mosque in their proper noun name and some use Masjid

Membership and duties

Please list below your username with the usual four tildes and what you would like to help out with (e.g., adding basic info. templates to all Uzbekistan mosques, or updating a category).

  • MP (talkcontribs) 15:25, 6 August 2008 (UTC) — everything at the moment.
  • Bless sins (talk) 03:24, 8 August 2008 (UTC) — I am at your service.
  • Yenemus (talk) 11:32, 20 July 2009 (UTC) — I'd be glad to help out with templates and article standardisation. At the moment, I'm trying to standardise the "Mosques in (country)" templates (e.g. see Template:Mosques in Bangladesh and Template:Mosques in Sweden); I've also been thinking that a Mosque infobox would be a good idea, maybe we could get together and design one? Oh, also, I made this "list of the largest mosques in the world" template, with information from this article, so if you find a good place to put it please feel free.
  • Al Ameer son (talk) 20:49, 20 July 2009 (UTC) —Worked extensively with the mosques of Palestine and Israel (including bringing al-Aqsa Mosque and the Great Mosque of Gaza to a GA rating).
  •  Melofors  TC  21:59, 11 March 2020 (UTC) — I work extensively on Islam-related articles in the United States, created several Islam-related articles, templates, and categories for the United States. Plan to fix several messy articles.
  • Chongkian — write new mosque articles, add infobox, add coordinate, add proper categorization, update navbox template, add wikiprojects, rate wikiprojects, tidy up sequence and naming of article contents, re-write things in a more objective manner, add defaultsort, add short description, write verified facts and only verified facts.
  • Ahendra (talk) 17:15, 23 November 2021 (UTC) - In Sha Allah will help to improve articles about mosques
  • Rangasyd (talk) 01:42, 18 February 2025 (UTC) — Standardisation of infoboxes, using Template:Tl, lead, See also, templates, and categories. Working across all countries and continents. Templates for Mosques in xxx countries have been completed, where applicable. The use of a standard  Green background with white text  has been adopted, in the same way that Roman Catholic churches, Presbyterian churches, Synagogues, etc., have colored navboxes.
  • Mr.work-shy -Creating new article and upload Historic images who are in public domain & Some of own work.

Standards

A typical mosque article should (?) have the following information as an absolute minimum:

I recently created a specific infobox for mosques. Please check it out at Template:Infobox mosque and see if you want to use it to standardise all mosque pages. I've already implemented it into the Masjid al-Haram and London Central Mosque articles. --Yenemus (talk) 19:36, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
I think its better to keep the old one (Template:Infobox religious building) since its more flexible. If you change all the mosque pages over to this new template, you'd be doing alot of unnecessary work just for the 'Leadership' section, which in most cases you won't even be able to fill in. ~ Toushiro 「 話 」 04:58, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, and I partly agree with you but I just think it needs some adjustments and is still a good idea. The religious building infobox is far too vague and it seems redundant to mention "Architectural type: mosque" and "Religious affilition: Islam" all the time when the word Mosque is in the page title. This is being discussed further at the talk page. --Yenemus (talk) 09:43, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Please use Template:Tl at all times.
  • The religious_affiliation should be Islam, or, where known, the tradition of Islam (e.g. Sunni Islam, Shia Islam, Shia (Twelver), etc.), and always linked, that impacts on the color of the infobox. Regrettably, Sufism does not populate the color; so please use Sunni, and then add Sufism as the sect.
    • Where the building was a mosque, and is no longer a mosque (e.g. used for other purposes or destroyed / demolished, or abandoned / in a ruinous state, then, please add the word (former)Script error: No such module "Check for unknown parameters". after the linked religious_affiliation to change the color of the infobox from green to grey.
  • The status should reflect the use of the building as a mosque, Friday mosque, Dargah, Sufi shrine, etc.
  • The functional_status should reflect whether the mosque is currently used for worship (Active), or not longer used for worship (Abandoned, Closed, Ruinous state, Destroyed, Preserved (as a museum)Script error: No such module "Check for unknown parameters"., Archaeological site, Under construction, etc.)
  • The architecture_type should reflect the design of the building that, in the majority of cases, will be Mosque architecture (not mosque), although, the building may have been initially designed for another purpose (Church, Hindu temple, etc.).
  • Where the building has been listed as an historic building, etc., under module, Template:Tl should be embedded. There are many in India that are are good examples, such as Baba Lului's Mosque.
Rangasyd (talk) 01:21, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Place of mosque (city/town etc. + country) (geographic coordinates too).
  • The country should always be a seperate line, and linked; and not added to the location line.
  • Generally speaking, only the location and country should be used. Please ignore territory, state, municipality, region, etc
Rangasyd (talk) 01:21, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Architecture (minarets, style etc.)
  • Add categories for Mosque buildings with domes by country, where volume is justified, otherwise, use by continent, where volume is not justified.
  • Add categories for Mosque buildings with minarets by country, where volume is justified, otherwise, use by continent, where volume is not justified.
  • Add categories for Mosques by architectural design by design category, difusing the use of the generic category of Islamic architecture as much as much as possible.
  • Add categories for Mosques by century by country, where volume is justified, otherwise, use by continent, where volume is not justified. Categories tend to diffuse from the 12th century, by continent; and from the 14th century by country.
  • Please do not use the initials AD, as this is linked to Christianity. Instead, please use CE. Better still, and where known, use Template:Tl for Hijri years or Template:Tl when the date is before 1 AH (622/623 CE).
