WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities is a WikiProject dedicated to improving articles related to fraternities and sororities, in addition to associated umbrella organizations. The project should be discussed on the talk page.

This Watchlist... contains the articles overseen by the WikiProject.

How you can help

  1. Join the Project by adding your account name here.
  2. Write articles! See our Articles for Creation list for needed articles. If you notice a notable missing group, add it to our list!
  3. Improve existing articles: edit for clarity and neutral language, remove promotional or "Peacock" wording, and add secondary reference citations.
  4. If you find a free, online source for collegiate yearbooks to help our research, add it here: List of US collegiate yearbooks.
  5. Respond to Article Alerts, listed below.
  6. Update North American fraternity or sorority chapter lists with the reference, Almanac of Fraternities and Sororities. You can provide corrections or updates to the Almanac here: Fraternity-Sorority Almanac Submission and Correction form
  7. Add "Fair Use" scans of missing crests and badges to articles.
  8. Always, follow these rules to ensure notability.
  9. Follow Recent Changes... to Project articles to look for vandalism, or to learn what other editors are doing.
  10. Finally, if you see good work being done, offer a Barnstar, or another award. Recommend a page as a Good Article, or suggest it for other types of recognition.

Lists

A table is the preferred way to list notable members and chapters. If the list has more than 50 entries, it should be moved to a stand-alone article, linked to the parent page using the "main template".

Name Chartered Institution Location Status Notes Reference
Eta Template:Dts Colby College Waterville, Maine Active Merged Script error: No such module "Lang". [1]Template:Efn

A good template example is here: Sigma Delta Rho.

Options for the Status field include:

  • Active - (indicates there is current or imminent chapter or colony activity on the campus)
  • Colony - (or some derivative. Associate or Provisional Chapter may be used instead.)
  • Consolidated - (for when two chapters of the same national merge. This is used when schools merge.)
  • Disbanded - (when a chapter goes dormant at the time of a merger.)
  • Inactive - (or Dormant, typically for those chapters that close, clearly before a merger or a national closure.)
  • Memorial - (to note when a chapter name is reserved to honor deceased members.)
  • Merged (Script error: No such module "Lang".) - when two chapters combine under the name of the successor merger partner. In the Notes field, use "Joined the existing XX chapter" or "Became the XX chapter" to differentiate between types of mergers.)
  • Moved - (used when the charter is moved, following students to an adjacent school, not when reissued to another chapter. There must be a link between the groups.)
  • Reestablished - (used when a chapter goes inactive but is reformed with a different name at a later date.)
  • Reissued - (used when a charter name is given to a new group at a new school, where there is no connection to an earlier student group.)
  • Unassigned - (used to note a chapter name that has not yet been assigned.)
  • Withdrew - (when a chapter does not participate in a main merger. Use "Withdrew, (local)" or "Withdrew, (ΑΒΓ)" to indicate their successor, if any.)

The Names of active chapters and colonies should be listed in bold. Inactive chapters should be listed in italics. If a name is unassigned or its status is unknown, it should be shown in Plain text. In the body text, chapter names are rendered in italics, regardless of active status.

The Chartered field may include a date or year of closure. Subsequent periods of activity may be included, separated by a comma. Insert an em dash between the DTS tags. An em dash is Template:Em (with no space on either side). Ex: Template:DtsTemplate:Dts; Template:Dts

The Institution field may include either the old or current name of the school. The names of closed institutions should be italicized. Redlinks are OK, indicating that an article is needed. An EFN can be added in the Reference section to explain name changes or closures.

The Notes field may highlight short items of interest to members of the broader readership, not just that particular chapter. This field can easily get out of hand; best to post "Winner of Albert Johnson Clean Yard Award five times in the 1990s" as an EFN. Or better yet, skip it, and leave that tidbit to the subject's website. The goal of the table is to offer a standardized, encyclopedic summary.

A sortable list may be constructed manually, allowing for variations in column names. See List of Alpha Gamma Delta chapters for a good example.
