File:Eclipse99mir.jpg
The 1999 total solar eclipse, as seen from Mir

I'm adding this image here because I'm not sure if it meets all the requirements for featured status right now. I believe it is one of the best pictures I've seen on wikipedia, for its dramatic effect, the quality and clarity of the image (compare the image from solar eclipse) and the way it demonstrates the subject of the article (that eclipses are caused by the shadow of the moon moving across the earth's surface). It is only used in the Eclipse article at present.

  • Comment: This is waaaay too small, only 400 x 300. A FP today should be at least some 1000 px wide, preferably more. If you can find a larger version with a free licence (this one seems to be copyrighted), then and only then I'd support. --Janke | Talk 20:16, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Response I've found a larger copy of the image at [1], along with copyright information. The biggest image available seems to be this 800*600 jpeg. In principle, would an image of this size be acceptable if it is properly licensed or PD? -- Howard Train 22:17, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
It would probably not be supported even in 800 x 600 - it's also unsharp, grainy, and shows compression artifacts. Would need a still better version to succeed. --Janke | Talk 04:43, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
  • One word: Size. I think this picture is almost guaranteed to be a FP if there's a larger and higher quality version with usable a license. The link by Howard Train to here might qualify for FP with Wikipedia's exceptions. --Tewy 21:19, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
