Template:NOINDEX Script error: No such module "Infobox".Template:Template other Template:User-multi (NOT "Universe Today") is the name used by a serial linkspammer who uses sock-puppets to link sites which redirect to his domains, often using domain squatting (e.g. bindiirwin.info, which the abuser linked in place of the official site on Bindi Irwin).

New sites should be reported ASAP at m:talk:Spam blacklist, referencing Universe Daily. As of May 2009 there are over 150 blacklisted domains.

Modus operandi

This vandal's main attack is as follows:

  • Registration of legitimate looking websites, frequently the same with different TLDs ( — .com, — .net, — .biz, — .info, — .name, etc). EG. "stephenhawkingsuniverse.com"
  • Redirecting those sites via a IFRAME to legit websites. "http://www.pbs.org/wnet/hawking/html/home.html"
  • Waiting a while...
  • Adding ad frames to his sites while still redirecting, or just redirecting the sites to the domain he was trying to spamdex all along.

As can be seen, this abuse can take some effort to notice beyond just following links. Running WHOIS on domains added to targeted articles is recommended. (Example for "stephenhawkingsuniverse.com"). Also check page source and AdSense IDs.

In the past the domains have also redirected to revisions of the Wikipedia articles that contained his linkspam. He has admitted to doing this for fraudulent SEO purposes, see this.

Previously his domains redirected to bindiirwin.com which was a webforum hosted at http://projectorion.proboards28.com/index.cgi.

More recently, his domains now redirect to his MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/universedaily and his vandalism is now targeting articles related to media moguls such as James Packer.

Some other traits:

  • Impersonation of legitimate sites. EG. The above attack on PBS/Hawking, Universe Today/Bad Astronomy, etc.
  • Malice toward, and personal attacks against other users, especially those who revert his linkspam (example, (examples))
  • Use of sockpuppets, undisclosed IPs, and open proxies all in violation of applicable policies.
  • Widespread spamming of the same domains across other Wikimedia Foundation projects (other Wikipedias, Wikiquote, Commons, etc.)
