Abraxas Magazine
ABRAXAS MAGAZINE was founded by poets Warren Woessner and James Bertolino in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1968. They
alternated editing issued for the first six issues, then Woessner took
over; in 1981 Ingrid Swanberg became editor-in-chief. They
received grants from Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines and from National Endowment for the Arts fairly quickly. The first issue was mimeo, then they switched
to the emerging technology of Insty-Prints (photo offset). They started
with the goal of publishing good young writers who had nowhere else
to publish, and published them alongside the few well-know writers they
could get to submit. Despite a recent issue, it is not clear that
Abraxas will continue; over the last 5 year, they
published no other issues; Abraxas is nevertheless one of the longest-lived
independent (no university/institutional/foundation support) little mags
in the United States.

The John E Vistic Experience
The John E Vistic Experience are a seminal Bristol based psych alt.country band. Founded by singer-songwriter John E Vistic circa 2001 after the implosion of his art-dub-rock band SUBGOD and the riverboat accident which put an end to his long time successful acoustic partnership with famous bluesman Slide Hambidge Snr. The John E Vistic Experience quickly rose to notoriety with their brash Jamaican St.Pauls suits, epic songs, Pro-American speechifying and tendancy to dissolve into booze fuelled disorder onstage. Vistic cites a meeting with Anton of the Brian Jones Town Massacre as inspirational for the group's anarchic stage antics and detuned guitars - 'You got to ride the White Horses Home like Anton' (Evening Post 2007). The band rightly won an American Independent Music Award in 2005 for their song 'RiverBoat Blues' (a song inspired by the fatal trip with Slide Hambidge Snr in 1999) and the band went on to release their alt.country first album 'Lighting Out For The Territories' (Black Heart Studios, 2005). The album title comes from the last lines of Huckleberry Finn in which Huck and Jim decide to 'Light out for the Territories' - to the great unknown expanse of the American continent which lies beyond. The album rightly begins with Riverboat Blues and takes the listener on a 12 track journey across the fleeing landscape of Americana as John E Vistic is pursued by Devils, terrorists, love, loathing and the Great American Dream. 'Song For Johny Cash' (which was written before the great man's death) is an invocation of Cash as Ulysses - the lonely wanderer forever doomed to seek out the Happy Isles. The last song 'Let the Light Come Down' is a fitting end to the album - a lamentful beckoning after Revelation and Redemption in world too full of sorrow and dust.
The band's output since their first album has been varied and plentiful (EPs - Oh Allelluiah, Long Kiss GoodBye, Cold Hearted Baby, etc) but in the tradition of the Brian Jones Town's independent tradition, released independently with none yet reaching the wider mainstream notice that some critics have said the band deserve. John E Vistic still lives and makes music in Bristol and there are rumours of a new John E Vistic album entitled 'Extinction Blues' being made as we write.
