In 1982 he won the National Banjo Championship in Winfield, Kansas. In two other years' competitions, he rated third place.
He relocated to the Dallas area in the 1980s where he joined Danger in the Air. When the band dissolved, McKinney moved to Nashville in 1990 where he continued to perform using the band's name. He and his wife now perform as the James & Angela McKinney Band

Multirate Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (MR-AODV)
Traditional ad-hoc routing protocols typically choose minimum hop paths for transmissions. In a multi-rate environment, where nodes may elect between several transmission rates in order to accommodate different channel conditions, these protocols usually choose paths that contain long range links, with low effective throughput and low reliability. MR-AODV is a reactive routing protocol based on AODV that leads to the election of high throughput routes while not increasing significantly the signaling overhead. By allowing a node to have a complete knowledge of its one-hop neighborhood topology, it is able to significantly increase the performance of the network through the improvement of the route election process on multi-rate environments.
