Sligo Way

Template:Afc r

The Sligo Way is a 75km long distance trail that goes through the county Sligo. Starting at Lough Talt (where the Western Way ends and the Foxford Way starts as well) it goes through the Ox Mountains, besides Lough Easky to 1km south of Templeboy (where B&B accomodation is availlable). From Templeboy it leads further through Coolaney, Collooney (train station and B&B availlable). Then leading besides the shore of Lough Gill it ends in the village of Dromahair (county Leitrim, B&B and hostel accomodation availlable). The Way is very scenic, overlooking Sligo Bay and various lakes. The part between Collooney and Dromahair is especially scenic for its views over the valley where Collooney and Ballintogher lay. The signposting is very good.

Candidate for Councillor at Large for Thunder Bay, Ontario

Template:Afc r

August 9, 2006

Vince Riccio has officially announced his bid to run for Councillor at Large in the upcoming Fall municipal election. Riccio says, “Residents have encouraged me to run because of their growing concerns as to the future of this city.” He adds, “I have strong confidence and faith in this community and what it can become, that is why I chose to complete my post secondary education here in Thunder Bay and plan to continue to call this city home.”

Riccio is a graduate of Lakehead University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English as well as a Bachelor of Education degree. Born and raised in Thunder Bay, he has volunteered with various organizations in this community and currently sits as a board director on the Thunder Bay Police Youths Corps. In addition, he has been actively involved politically over the last four years.

Riccio sees potential in Thunder Bay, and believes that out migration is a serious issue affecting this city and the region. “Thunder Bay has seen its population decline since 2001; I’m confident that Thunder Bay could be one of the most progressive Canadian cities with the ability to achieve prosperity and quality of life well into the 21st century. We need to find realistic solutions to this and other areas of concern in our city.”

Riccio adds, “Some people consider Thunder Bay to be at a disadvantage because of its geographic location, claiming that it’s in the middle of nowhere. Rather, I see our city’s location as being in the middle of everywhere.”

Riccio says that his platform will be unveiled as the campaign progresses.

Afterhours (band)

Template:Afc r

Afterhours is an Italian alternative rock band, formed in Milan in the end of the 1980s. [Image:http://images.musicclub.it/foto/af/big/afterhours.2.tif.big.jpg]

Biography

Often compared, regarding their early work, with famous bands like Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins, Afterhours actually is the most important and influent alternative rock band in the entire Italian scene, led by Manuel Agnelli, the icon of this genre (and the creator of itinerant festival Tora!Tora! which suggests every year lots of interesting band from the underground Italian scene. Agnelli has also been the producer of the first albums of Cristina Donà, Scisma, Pitch and the work "Club Privé by Massimo Volume. The original lineup showed Manuel Agnelli as the lead singer, Xabier Iriondo as lead guitar , bassist Alex Zerilli and still present drummer Giorgio Prette. Now the only two members who never changed are Prette and Agnelli, since Zerilli was switched with Andrea Viti and then Roberto Dell'Era for the bass guitar, and Giorgio Ciccarelli then took Iriondo's place as rhythm guitar with Agnelli being the lead guitarist. They later called Dario Ciffo for the violin, keyboards and guitar, and Enrico Gabrielli (keyboard, percussions, aerophones and other).

The beginning

Afterhours were officially formed in 1986 from an idea of Manuel Agnelli. The name of the band is a tribute to Velvet Underground. Lou Reed's Velvet Underground, Hüsker Dü and post-punk are the major influences. They began with My Bit Boy, the first Lp, released under Toast Records in 1987. The first EP will be released in 1989, again under Toast Records, and was called All The Good Children Go To Hell: the new work features a crude and touchy rock, but still too inexperienced. The band now sings in English language. In 1990, Afterhours goes straight to Vox Pop, breaking up with Toast. The band takes part in a tribute album to Joy Division with a re-interpretated cover of ''Shadowplay''. Second full-length album is then released, called During Christine's Sleep, a work that splits from the precedent by being filled with introspective and suffering atmospheres, as well as with the trademark powerful changes. Two years later, in 1992, a mini-LP called Cocaine Head is released, this time with Giorgio Prette behind the drum set. When Xabier Iriondo himself joins the band, Afterhours release the new album Pop Kills Your Soul, in 1993. This new work is more mature than the older ones, with more influences as pop distortions drawn inside the band by Iriondo's guitar. Some songs are very good and these will be published in Italian language in the next album, Germi, in 1995. In the meanwhile they coverize Rino Gaetano's "Mio Fratello E' Figlio Unico and Ivano Fossati's "La Canzone Popolare. Rino Gaetano's one will be included in a Gaetano's tribute album and in Germi itself.

The turning point (1995)

With the release of Germi, in 1995, the first being sung in Italian, Afterhours stiffen in the best manner their already consolidated name in the underground Italian alternative rock scene. They also assume the features which will take them to fame. These are actually: rough sound, something melodic (as in Dentro Marilyn), something harder (as in Germi), noise, psychedelic rock, post-punk and post-grunge inspirations when talking about the music influences, and Dada and James Burrough as extramusical influences, such as anarchic and sarcastic lyrics. Bassist Alex Zerilli left the band after the release of this album. In 1997, they successfully make it in the goal of climbing over themselves, by releasing their true masterpiece Hai Paura Del Buio?, a more eclectic work than Germi. In this we can find the hardcore fury (in "Lasciami leccare l'adrenalina" and "Dea", melodic pop (in "Voglio Una Pelle Splendida"), musical experimentation (with some songs being instrumental), grunge (in "Male Di Miele"), hard rock ("in Veleno"), space rock (in the intro of "Elymania") and acoustic ballads such as "Simbiosi". In 1999 it's the time of Non E' Per Sempre, the softest album, with a more mature sound and the insertion of Dario Ciffo's violins, in the official lineup. Songs as "Milano Circonvallazione Esterna", "La Verità Che Ricordavo" and "Non Si Esce Vivi Dagli Anni '80" (a true generational anthem).

The 1999 - 2002 projects

Manuel Agnelli began to show interest in other projects such as editorial ones ("Il Meraviglioso Tubetto") and musical ones (co-operating with Massimo Volume in ""Gli Agnelli Clementi"). A double live album was also released, called Siam Tre Piccoli Porcellin, half electric and half acoustic, with the unpublished "La Sinfonia Dei Topi", and is opened Tora!Tora! festival's project. The band then suffers the worst loss since they've been playing together, when guitarist Xabier Iriondo leaves the band.

The latest works

In 2002 Afterhours release Quello Che Non C'è, an album that wants to separate from the evolution started with the precedent without making it too visible. The album is another time softened, filled with psychedelical Ciffo's violins, and has a more consistent music. The album is also the darker and deeper of the band, with a leit-motiv based on the loss of every point of reference and values. Naif lyrics that we found in the earlier albums are now definitely gone, supplanted by personal and disillusioned ones. As you can notice by the lyrics, there's no sight of hope in the lyrics, only words of desperation. In this album we also find a tribute to Emidio "Mimi" Clementi, with a song in Massimo Volume's style. This album features the biggest commercial impact of the band, by reaching the 4th position of Italian charts. The Milan-based quartet begins a long tour which shows them supported by Mercury Rev, in 2002, and Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers, later in 2004. In 2005 is released the latest album, Ballate Per Piccole Iene, anticipated by the single "Ballata Per La Mia Piccola Iena", which sees the EP reach the 2nd position in Italian charts. The album is also translated into "Ballads For Little Hyenas" and sent abroad in export edition (sang in English language too). The tour is supported another time by Greg Dulli (ex-Afghan Wings) and, in the 9/11 Rome date at Villaggio Globale, by ex-Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan.

Nang (adj.)

Template:Afc r

Nang is a popular slang word used by schoolboys and girls in England, to describe something which is good. Another definition for the word is being up to date with the latest fashions, and to be respected by others that are 'nang' or 'with it'.

It was usually used among the 'chav' culture, but other children have taken it to their own since 2005.

Pack FM

85.165.234.164 19:04, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

whutduzFMstand4? That is the question that PackFM hopes you will seek to answer on his debut full-length project whutduzFMstand4? This young Brooklyn MC is already off to an exceptional start in his musical career, and he is ready to take on the world. In 1997 his first recorded song, "Hit List", was played on New York's Hot 97's now defunct Home Jams show. The song became an underground hit, and was played for four consecutive weeks during the final month of the Home Jams show. It created considerable buzz among underground Hip Hop heads in New York. In May of '98 he also appeared on the B-side single "Lifestyles of the Poor Wit' a Fortune", which was released by Ope Entertainment. "I was influenced by acts like A Tribe Called Quest, EPMD, and Big Daddy Kane," explains PackFM, "so every time I make a song my goal is to make music the way they imagined Hip Hop to be fifteen years later" PackFM began his distinguished battle career early, including such titles as "88HipHop MC Battle Champion", which he held for four undefeated months until retiring and being placed in their Hall Of Fame. He was the last man standing out of 32 MC's in the legendary "Braggin' Rites" tournament. In 1999 he swept the competition at "Next Generation Battle" at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. He also won the TDK sponsored "24 Hour MC Battle" an astounding three months in a row, and was featured along with previous winners in XXL Magazine.

In 2000, PackFM collaborated with Tonedeff to compete in the Napster/Rapstation.com "Power To The People And Beats" contest. Their track was chosen among the top six out of over 80 contestants. That same year he was a finalist in the Rock Steady Crew's annual MC Battle, and then placed 2nd out of 100 MCs in the Source Magazine's "Unsigned Hype Live MC Battle Tournament". After that huge accomplishment, he took a long break from battling, only to return for a triumph in the 2003 "Everlast Harlem Lyricist Championship". Countless victories in the battle circuit caught the attention of a few independent filmmakers. PackFM was featured in the award-winning Dutch documentary Kika NY, and appeared in the acclaimed independent film Freestyle alongside Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, Supernatural, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac. Freestyle aired on VH1's HipHop Week and was featured in the Sundance Film Festival in 1999, and received praise from the critics for it's raw portrayal of hardcore battle emcees.

Although an accomplished battle rapper and performer, PackFM is out to prove that there are still talented live MC's who can make classic songs. "I haven't been in a battle in well over a year, but people still remember me from the battles rather than my records," he says. "So many people feel that MC's who are good at battling and freestyling are incapable of making records, which isn't always true...there is so much more that I'm capable of." Not only has PackFM proven his talents in the battle circuit, but he has consistently shown his ability to move the crowd on stage, performing alongside some of Hip Hop's finest, including M.O.P., Ghostface Killah, Rahzel, Masta Ace, Brand Nubian, the Beatnuts, Slick Rick and Common, just to name a few.

Often described as witty and crafty, his clever lyricism has been featured on various projects and 12"s, including his debut SOLO 12" single, "Freestyle Marathon". He came together with Tonedeff, Substantial and Session as Extended F@mm to release the highly acclaimed EP Happy F*ck You Songs. The EP created such a strong buzz, it earned the foursome a feature in "Off the Radar" in The Source Magazine's March 2003 issue. He was also featured prominently in spots on MTV's Hip Hop Week with Wordsworth and fellow QN5 label mates Tonedeff and Mecca. Additionally he has headlined and released a popular series of mixtapes entitled Featured Material, Volumes 1 and 2. Featured Material Volume 3 drops mid July 2004, and features Jean Grae, Last Emperor, Bad Seed, Tonedeff and J.U.I.C.E. whutduzFMstand4? Is a break from the trend of slaphappy raps and sugary beats that has flooded the industry as of late. The album will be released in Fall 2004, with the lead single "Forevershine" b/w "Upclose and Personal" featuring Substantial of Extended F@mm and "Set It Up" featuring Chicago's freestyle phenom J.U.I.C.E., dropping in June 2004.

Washers Game

Template:Afc r

The Game of Washers is a popular southern version of Horseshoes. It is an outdoor lawn game. Two opposing teams play against each other by throwing washers across, usually a front lawn, into a box with a small cup in it. Depending on where the washer lands, in the cup, in the box, or on the lawn, different points are assigned. First team to the pre-designated point total wins.

This is an old family game that has been around for along time.

Royce Hall

Template:Afc r

After [Walt Disney Concert Hall] and [Los Angeles International Airport]'s [Theme Building], [UCLA]'s Royce Hall is perhaps the most recognizable building in [Los Angeles]. Built in the [Romanesque Revival] style, its signature pair of [brick] and [sandstone] towers have inspired numerous of the university's logos.

Designed by David Allison and named after philosopher [Josiah Royce], Royce Hall's exterior design loosely follows that of the Church of San Ambrogio in [Milan], [Italy]. Comprising a large [concert hall], classrooms, and faculty offices, it was completed in 1929 as one of the four original buildings of the [University of California, Los Angeles]. Severely damaged in the 1994 [Northridge Earthquake], it underwent a $71 million restoration that was completed in 1997.

Due to its acclaimed acoustics and 6,600 pipe Skinner [pipe organ], the 1,833 [concert hall] has often been used for recording sessions by the [Los Angeles Philharmonic]. Individuals who have appeared on its stage include [George Gershwin], [Albert Einstein], [Leonard Bernstein], [Ella Fitzgerald], and [John F. Kennedy].
