Highlighting and sentences

New articles should begin with a complete sentence. The title word/phrase should first appear in bold

OK I must admit that your technical discussion lost me somewhat. I coloured the map using Paint! Punting

You have made large contributions to this article (appreciated) but I am concerned as the style of writing seems more "informal guide" than "encyclopædia". Hi Thruston, I see what you mean about my contribution on punt poles. I'll work on something a bit more balanced - the POV in favour of wooden poles seems to be that general held by puntsman in Cambridge, and some of it comes from a conversation with the puntsmen of my college. Oxford

I like your idea of smartening up tourist attraction, viewing 'Cat - Visitor attractions in Oxfordshire' is a bit boring, I'm not sure which way round to approach it, presumably Cat' pages are auto pick ups from Cat' markers, so editing that might cause maintenance problems. Munro images again

Hi. It seems you've not put the PD tag onto Image:Munro-map-sec3.png and Image:Munro-map-sec4.png. The commons people are terribly strict about image tags, you you might want to tag them before someone there deletes them altogether.

I have to ask - what are you using to render the topographic info? I'm stuck using Panmap (which is horrid), so I'm looking for something more full-featured. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:38, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, a cute story about one of your rivals and Wikipedia.

On 12 February this year, the Sunday Times ran a short piece about how Wikipedia is full of graffiti-type rubbish by vandals. It even named some, described their attacks in detail and said that full details of what the vandals had written "can still be read by anyone logging on and viewing the history of updates."
Unfortunately, the Sunday Times writer (Maurice Chittenden) did not actually, er, do this. I've checked the edit history, and Chittenden's statements about one Thruston are verifiably false. In fact, they're detailed, circumstantial, and complete cobblers.
Which leaves us with two publications which contain false information. One comes with obvious caveats and the facility to remove false statements. And the other pretends to be a fully reliable source, and is notoriously cumbersome to correct (even if a correction is made in a subsequent edition, someone could pick up an archive copy of the false story and not know there was correction - unlike Wikipedia).

Yes I learn that only recently, when I was doing my Eng lang coursework. I had, however, not appreciated that that this always happened with the 'ize' phoneme, so i thought (stupidly) that this would be 'economize' but otherwise 'economisation'. Punting in France

Hi & thanks for picking up on this sloppy entry. I have punted on Venise Verte (usually only the boat-hiring folk do it themselves, for you). The boats are much shorter (therefore less directional stability) and the whole thing appear to be a bit more 'rustic'. I suppose, really, that it is remarkably similar, so I've reworded. Citing William of Ockham

Just wanted to make sure that you saw this response on Wikipedia talk:Template messages/Sources of articles/Generic citations from Ligulem.

Exactly for these special cases is the "author" param. The idea behind the first last thing is, that usually the information tuple (last,year) can be used as an identification. So everything that is not last should go into first. And if you don't know what do, put everything into author. And if these templates here don't fit at all, don't use them. And keep in mind that on this wiki here, there is no requirement to use these templates. There are even Wikipedians, that don't like them at all. That's probably one of the reasons why you were reverted. The citation templates can only be used on a per article consensus. But don't go around removing the citation temlates from articles. So basically you would replace last and first with author such as:

Munro Images

I really like the maps that you have created for the List of Munros. What software have you used to produce them? They look a lot like the kind of maps that GMT can produce, but if they are, I'd be interested to know what coastline data you're using as your dataset includes far more lakes than anything I can find — for example, in the map of region 4, the best dataset I can find includes Linnhe, Etive, Blackwater, Ericht and Lochy, but not Ossian, Treig, Moy or Laggan. -- ras52 11:48, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Prof Bundy

Thanks. I do know there is always the possibility that somebody will add things out of vanity. I have set eyes on Colin Bundy once, so I don't think I count in that category. However, I did think it was a little, er, gratuitous (?) of somebody to list Winston Churchill among the alumni of the University of Bristol so I removed him, pointing out that a Chancellor is not really an alumnus. I reasoned that alumni bring honour to the university while chancellorships are more a way of the university honouring a public figure (albeit in return for some glamour). I must check to see if the Duke of Edinburgh is down as a Cambridge alumnus or the Queen Mother and Princess Royal as London alumnae. (And perhaps should check the actual meaning of alumnus before I go accusing people of not being one). Regarding the former college barman whom you seem to wish to remove from that list, couldn't he be dropped on the technicality that he (presumably) didn't matriculate?--Oxonian2006 00:00, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Toby. Excuse my pedantry, but as a fellow Oxonian, may I quibble the labelling of the Stern and Bow in your fine sketch? You appear to be advocating the backward approach used at the Fenland Polytechnic, where the punter stands on the slippery deck high above the waterline - quite obviously not as God or nature intended. Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing Template:Tlc will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
