List of Munros
Great work with the maps for list of Munros. Just one thought, I think a bit of colour might make them even better. I've uploaded a version of section 1, what do you think? I am more than happy to do this for your other (excellent) maps. Grinner 09:08, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)
OK I must admit that your technical discussion lost me somewhat. I coloured the map using Paint! I will probably colour the rest this afternoon - I've not got a lot on at the moment. ;-) I'm sorry but I can;t help with your technical needs, but good luck, and replace my crude versions when you work out how to do it! You have made large contributions to this article (appreciated) but I am concerned as the style of writing seems more "informal guide" than "encyclopædia". I hope you didn't just copy straight from the reference books (as this would be a copyright violation), but if you could possibly rewrite your contributions in a suitable way that would be great. ed g2s • talk00:29, 2 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, not that I didn't find the piece amusing, but most of those comments can be considered POV. In its current state it would be more suitable for a wikibook or something. ed g2s • talk12:22, 5 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hi Thruston, I see what you mean about my contribution on punt poles. I'll work on something a bit more balanced - the POV in favour of wooden poles seems to be that general held by puntsman in Cambridge, and some of it comes from a conversation with the puntsmen of my college. I'll start making the changes now. MikeMorley14:16, 13 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
I like your idea of smartening up tourist attraction, viewing 'Cat - Visitor attractions in Oxfordshire' is a bit boring, I'm not sure which way round to approach it, presumably Cat' pages are auto pick ups from Cat' markers, so editing that might cause maintenance problems. Any suggestions as I would like to help make it better.Alf 21:01, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC) ooops - giving you a direct link put you on the Cat' page. : ) Alf 21:04, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC) hmm that edit didn't work either : )Alf 21:08, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, it wasn't the VfD decision. But now that I think about it, if you want to use your editorial discretion and keep the merge/redir in place, I don't think anyone would mind. Just be sure to fix the disambiguation as well. Regards, Dmcdevit·t 19:32, August 5, 2005 (UTC)
Munro images again
Hi. It seems you've not put the PD tag onto Image:Munro-map-sec3.png and Image:Munro-map-sec4.png. The commons people are terribly strict about image tags, you you might want to tag them before someone there deletes them altogether.
I have to ask - what are you using to render the topographic info? I'm stuck using Panmap (which is horrid), so I'm looking for something more full-featured. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:38, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Thruston, I've written a nice little letter to go to another paper (Independent OK with you?). Excuse me doing this, but it was a general attack on Wikipedia, so I feel any of us can defend it. Anyway, I take your name in vain, so you get to yay or nay this. Or amend it. See what you think :-) JackyR06:55, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi, a cute story about one of your rivals and Wikipedia.
On 12 February this year, the Sunday Times ran a short piece about how Wikipedia is full of graffiti-type rubbish by vandals. It even named some, described their attacks in detail and said that full details of what the vandals had written "can still be read by anyone logging on and viewing the history of updates." Unfortunately, the Sunday Times writer (Maurice Chittenden) did not actually, er, do this. I've checked the edit history, and Chittenden's statements about one Thruston are verifiably false. In fact, they're detailed, circumstantial, and complete cobblers. Which leaves us with two publications which contain false information. One comes with obvious caveats and the facility to remove false statements. And the other pretends to be a fully reliable source, and is notoriously cumbersome to correct (even if a correction is made in a subsequent edition, someone could pick up an archive copy of the false story and not know there was correction - unlike Wikipedia). Hi,
I run the classical civilisations portal on wikipedia, and am looking for advice on what to add next, or commentary on how i've done so far; I'm only as A-level student, and i wondered of you knew more about classics.
Naturally. I'd appreciate any help. In the meanwhile i'll write a re-direct to the portal with the 'z' spelling - i can only blame my teacher! Thanks Pydos10:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes I learn that only recently, when I was doing my Eng lang coursework. I had, however, not appreciated that that this always happened with the 'ize' phoneme, so i thought (stupidly) that this would be 'economize' but otherwise 'economisation'. In the meanwhile I blame my teacher. Pydos16:20, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi & thanks for picking up on this sloppy entry.
I have punted on Venise Verte (usually only the boat-hiring folk do it themselves, for you). The boats are much shorter (therefore less directional stability) and the whole thing appear to be a bit more 'rustic'.
I suppose, really, that it is remarkably similar, so I've reworded. Let me know what you think Punt (boat). Ballista02:22, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your point on human overuse is right on target. ive amended the article accordingly. see my more elaborate comments on the article talk page. Anlace01:13, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Exactly for these special cases is the "author" param. The idea behind the first last thing is, that usually the information tuple (last, year) can be used as an identification. So everything that is not last should go into first. And if you don't know what do, put everything into author. And if these templates here don't fit at all, don't use them. And keep in mind that on this wiki here, there is no requirement to use these templates. There are even Wikipedians, that don't like them at all. That's probably one of the reasons why you were reverted. The citation templates can only be used on a per article consensus. But don't go around removing the citation temlates from articles. There is no consensus for that either. --Ligulem 12:38, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
So basically you would replace last and first with author such as:
{{cite book
| author = William of Ockham
| authorlink = William of Ockham
| title = Quodlibeta septem
| origdate = before 1327
| publisher = Paris
| year = 1487
}}
to get:
Script error: No such module "citation/CS1".
Note that this is an unusual case also because the publisher is not known but the location is - so I put the location and date as the publisher - since the publisher is a prerequisite to the location field. --Trödel13:22, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually - I was wrong - there is also an original date field - I have updated above to make it work better --Trödel13:36, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome - I agree with the comment son the talk page, though, using cite book is probably not the easiest thing to do in this case. --Trödel19:17, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I really like the maps that you have created for the List of Munros. What software have you used to produce them? They look a lot like the kind of maps that GMT can produce, but if they are, I'd be interested to know what coastline data you're using as your dataset includes far more lakes than anything I can find — for example, in the map of region 4, the best dataset I can find includes Linnhe, Etive, Blackwater, Ericht and Lochy, but not Ossian, Treig, Moy or Laggan. -- ras5211:48, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Prof Bundy
Latest comment: 25 August 20061 comment1 person in discussion
Thanks. I do know there is always the possibility that somebody will add things out of vanity. I have set eyes on Colin Bundy once, so I don't think I count in that category. However, I did think it was a little, er, gratuitous (?) of somebody to list Winston Churchill among the alumni of the University of Bristol so I removed him, pointing out that a Chancellor is not really an alumnus. I reasoned that alumni bring honour to the university while chancellorships are more a way of the university honouring a public figure (albeit in return for some glamour). I must check to see if the Duke of Edinburgh is down as a Cambridge alumnus or the Queen Mother and Princess Royal as London alumnae. (And perhaps should check the actual meaning of alumnus before I go accusing people of not being one). Regarding the former college barman whom you seem to wish to remove from that list, couldn't he be dropped on the technicality that he (presumably) didn't matriculate?--Oxonian200600:00, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Jasper-Fforde-publicity-portrait.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Arne-Jacobsen-Ant-chair.png
Latest comment: 2 January 20081 comment1 person in discussion
Thanks for uploading Image:Arne-Jacobsen-Ant-chair.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Cardinal Puff, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Cardinal Puff is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

A tag has been placed on In case of emergency, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.
If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add Template:Tl on the top of In case of emergency and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Medicellis (talk) 21:26, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London
Latest comment: 3 August 20081 comment1 person in discussion
I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.
If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.
The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!
Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.
I have nominated One Fat Hen, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/One Fat Hen. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.
Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybaleamphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.
Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
Latest comment: 15 March 20111 comment1 person in discussion
Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.
For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of rowing venues, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Caversham (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
