By United States law all images from anywhere in the world created before 1923 is in the public domain (see WP:PD). As Wikipedia is based in the US, it is bound by this law.

It's PD under US law and from my research, the photo was taken in the late 19th century so it also qualifies under the 100year+ rule - Ali-oops 10:57, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
