I was born in northern Nevada and raised in Fernley. After graduating high school at the top of my class in 1992, I attended Northwestern University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Science in 1996.

While at Northwestern, I won a contest, and so my name can be found in the film Tromeo and Juliet.

I am distantly related to Simon Kenton.
