Navigation of river

The portion of the Wisconsin River above the hydroelectric dam at Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, is hereby declared to be a nonnavigable waterway of the United States for purposes of title 46, including but not limited to the provisions of such title relating to vessel inspection and vessel licensure, and the other maritime laws of the United States.33USC59aa --Dual Freq 22:44, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deepest?

The Wisconsin is I believe the deepest river in North America, and one of the deeper ones in the world. Worth mentioning I think, some word smith want to take on the challenge?--70.8.191.41 05:52, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Add the information after citing a Reliable source. A brief search using Google doesn't seem to agree with your assertion. --Dual Freq 16:25, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Distance Discrepancy?

The distance given between the Prairie du Sac dam and the mouth is 93 miles, yet a distance of 200 miles from Portage to its mouth is given several other places. The cities of Prairie du Sac and Portage are maybe 30 miles apart with Lake Wisconsin essentially in between them. Where do these additional 107 miles come from? The 200 mile figure seems erroneous right from the beginning. Perhaps there's some geographic confusion between the city of Portage (in Columbia county) and Portage county (where Stevens Point is located)? Radon360 (talk) 18:12, 13 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed; I removed the "200 mile" figure (over 16 years after this comment; better late than never). --GoldCoastPrior (talk) 18:46, 25 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Navigability

I am removing the sentence from the opening section on 'navigability' because it conflicts with the fact the the Wisconsin is a "navigable river of the United States." I am not disputing that in some sense the author of this sentence may be right, but it requires further clarification about what sense of "navigable" is intended, and unfortunately the in-line citation is stale. Actually historically steam boats did run as far as Nekoosa, and steam boats did run regularly between Stevens Point and Mosinee, so even in that era it was navigable much further than Portage, as the sentence states. Distance from Prairie du Chien

In the overview section, the article states the mouth is 3 miles south of Prairie du Chien, while it says it is 10 miles south of Prairie du Chien in the Lower Wisconsin River State Riverway section. --ItalianMustache (talk) 05:34, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of Crossings on the Wisconsin River

I was putting together a list of crossings on the Wisconsin River with chat GPT. I was running short on time and patience with it. If someone can find a good source and fine tune this, it is a decent start. --Wikideas1 (talk) 08:57, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
