By Google search alone, "william H. english" Indiana 1822 has 2,650 results, while "william Hayden english" Indiana 1822 has less than half as many, 1,230. Furthermore, "william h. english" Indiana congress has over 6,000 Google results, while "william hayden english" Indiana congress only 1,800.

Additionally, contemporary and modern sources alike abbreviate his middle name, ranging from an 1861 biographical directory of the Indiana state legislature, to an 1898 Indiana historical society book, to a 2020 biography about English. This, like most historical articles about members of Congress, takes it’s name from the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, which uses his full middle name.
