The first sentence states that Wilkes Land was 'formerly claimed' as part of the Australian Antarctic Territory. When did Australia renounce it's claim? Or should it have said 'formally claimed'? Iramoo Bearbrass 05:34, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Iramoo, the author either meant 'formally' – as you suggest – or in my opinion is mistaken as to the legal effect of the Antarctic Treaty. The Antarctic Treaty is by no means a renunciation by claimant States of their territorial sovereignty claims. The Treaty merely acts to “freeze” all claims; in many respects an agreement to disagree. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.209.80.142 (talk) 14:24, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- And what is meant by: ...the validity of this claim has been placed for the period of the operation of the Antarctic Treaty...? Are there some words left out? Valetude (talk) 04:38, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
