what's the etymology of Tarnovo ? -- Criztu 29 June 2005 15:31 (UTC)
How did tarnovo get veliko when this is serbo-croatian, not bulgarian?
- What are you talking about? Malko Tarnovo is a separate town far away from Veliko Tarnovo, in Strandzha, and has little to do with Veliko Tarnovo except the name. Also, 'veliko' is absolutely standard Bulgarian, the neuter form of velik, 'great'. The same word exists in Serbo-Croatian (meaning also 'big' and not only 'great'), of course, but you kind of expect that when talking about South Slavic languages. Could you please explain your question so I could be more detailed about the answer? What exactly bother is you with the name? - It's called "Great Turnovo" not "Velico Turnovo" in Eu/en —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.42.92.100 (talk) 19:03, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- Serbo-croatian tarnovo? Are you ok ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.42.92.100 (talk) 19:05, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
According to some Bulgarian philologists the word Tarnovo came from Vlach/Romanian TURNU, meaning tower. It was an old strongpoint here before Bulgars invasion
The name
Veliko means "Great" as in Veliko Britania for Great Britain. Tarnovo has its origins in Thorn. It is illegal to transliterate it as Turnovo. (talk) 18:50, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

From Romanian word TURNU
Other origin of Tarnovo may be from Vlach/Romanian word Turnu, where "Turnu" means tower and later was transformed in Tarnovo. Romanians and Aromanians lived and sill live in Bulgaria and their influence was stronger during the apparition of Tarnovo fortress.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.124.182.46 (talk • contribs)
