Wikipedia's January 22 page says Tobruk was captured by British troops on that day. This page in Wikipedia says British and Australian troops, on January 12.
10/29/05: Added secondary knowledge derived from Order of Battle research and my experience with the game noted in the article. Note that although my knowledge comes in part from a game that this game is meticulously researched and accurate both from a military and geographic perspective.

Strategic importance in World War II
I've made some corrections and changes to this section. Firstly, Italy invaded Egypt in September 1940, not in November. Secondly, Italy didn't invade Greece until October - it was Albania it had attacked earlier. I made a change to the section on the Allies' counter-attack to clarify that they went well beyond Tobruk - the Italians retreated all the way to El Agheila. Similarly, I clarified the extent of Rommel's advance: he, in turn, went beyond Tobruk, and got as far as Sollum. Finally, the Italian "invasion" of France only got as far as Menton and they only occupied some border areas, so I changed the wording from "occupied the south of France" to "occupied part of the south of France".
