physogastric queens
The text states that "In physogastric species, the queen adds an extra set of ovaries with each moult". My understanding was that insects do not molt after reaching maturity (as defined by by sexual reproduction and wings; Ephemeroptera are a partial exceptino). Mounds
I think the section on Mounds should be categorized as a stub in its current state. I'm puzzled that the subject of the Termite Mounds, which I find amazing - but unfortunately does not have enough expertise to write about myself - is not explored in more depth, but only mentioned in very broad terms. I urge people to extend that section - or perhaps "Termite Mounds" should be a topic on its own? Robbiedsl 27 Jun 2006
Termites as a foodstuff
I kinda browsed through the article, though I didnt see anywhere that termites are used as a foodstuff. I know that in many parts of africa the "flying ants" are used as a common food, when in season. Also the queen is sometimes dug up and eaten. Czech film
Template:Ping Is this film a WP:Reliable source? If it is well regarded by other sources then it certainly is. If it is made by a university then it may be. If I remember correctly it is the product of a Czech university. Invasive Spices (talk) 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Template:PingIt is from the Czech university and it is headed by the Termite Research project and meets all the criteria laid out for a reliable source. It is also in English.Dr.Decapod (talk) 18:23, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

- What is your issue with it? It is available in English, and the Scientist behind (Dr. Jan Šobotník) it has over 95 publications on termites himself, not even counting the rest of the team. Dr.Decapod (talk) 18:37, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
- My issue is that it isn't a reliable source - just being produced by a university is not enough to be reliable, and it is being used to support a statement of trivia. - MrOllie (talk) 23:31, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Evolution timing in lead
The lead states that "Previous estimates suggested the divergence took place during the Jurassic or Triassic. More recent estimates suggest that they have an origin during the Late Jurassic."
The source cited for this statement does not say this though. In the Conclusion of the source, the authors write "Using highly vetted fossil calibrations and genome-scale nuclear data to estimate divergence times, we show that most major groups of Blattodea originated during the Cretaceous (147–66 Myr) and thus arose much later than previously thought." From reading the entire article, it is clear that "most major groups of Blattodea" includes the Isoptera.
I would suggest a change to the wording to say "More recent research suggests that they have an origin during the Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous." while providing multiple sources - one for the Late Jurassic timing with another for Early Cretaceous.
If people are ok with this I will go ahead and make the change. NicheSports (talk) 18:58, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- I'd suggest going ahead with the changes. You have sources and not many people watch this page. If someone has newer or better sources they can make the case for a further change in the future. — Jts1882 | talk 08:50, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- After doing more research it seems like most sources point to a Late Jurassic origin so I left the existing text in the lead and just updated the reference to a source that reflects this. Thanks NicheSports (talk) 18:52, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
