Update - much better. I do feel the present update shapes up well actually. At least now it manages to accomodate the concerns of both admirers and sceptics as well as colouring people's perception of said institution. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.254.64.14 (talk • contribs) 16:22, 12 July 2005 ((UTC))
"Mickey Mouse degrees"
Mickey Mouse degrees do not exist. It is a dysphemism created by tabloids and promoted by those with an agenda for maintaining social distinctions. "Less prestigious subjects" is a more sophisticated, NPOV way of expressing the phenomenon. The JPS 20:08, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
Good work JPS, lets keep this as 'encyclopediac' fare rather than submitting to the abuse of plainly derogatory one-sidedness. As there is no 'policing' system we have to be open to those articles with vulnerabilities, of which there are many. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MRacer (talk • contribs) 17:03, 12 August 2005 ((UTC))
University ratings
(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)
There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Problem with Reference
The source for the information on the name, logo, and motto change is probably supposed to be to the Evening Gazette newspaper. Instead, it is to the Wikipedia article about the Evening Gazette, a circular reference. Can someone with more knowledge about UK newspapers fix this? Robert McClenon (talk) 22:44, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Not all references have a link to an online source. The link to the Wikipedia article is from the name of the publisher, not the name of the article, and is a common style element for citations. The citation is perfectly valid, I retrieved the article from Gale InfoTrac and have added the page number. SpinningSpark 00:48, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Conflict between Infobox and History
There is an inconsistency between the motto stated in the infobox, and the history which states that the motto was changed in 2009. I would edit the infobox, except that the history about the change does not appear to be properly sourced (as noted above). Robert McClenon (talk) 22:44, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Gained University Status
The bit about gaining University status makes it sounds like the university only started in 1992, and that before that date there was no way to obtain a degree in Middlesbrough. It also gives the impression that some great effort was made to improve everything so that it could pass some test of eligibility and climb onto the ladder of proper seats of learning. In fact, Teesside Polytechnic awarded degrees - as I'm sure Constantine College did prior to that (although I don't really know about that) - and, rather than make improvements to become a university, it became a university when polytechnics were done away with and they all became universities, automatically, throughout the United Kingdom. So much for "Gaining university status". Sunderland Polytechnic became a university a little before the rest, because Sunderland had become an official city - and a city should have a university. In reality, all polytechnics had been de facto universities for many years before 1992; the national conversion was just a formality. Francis Hannaway (talk) 17:06, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

"Cancelled film" section
Whole section about a storm in a teacup, a film screening that might not have happened - is it really noteworthy? BobFromBrockley (talk) 12:58, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
