Proposed change of “homosexual” to “gay” and “gays” to “gay people”

According to WP:GAY?, “gay” should generally be preferred to “homosexual” outside of situations that specifically refer to sexual activity. Also, terms like “gays”, “lesbians”, “homosexuals” can be seen as dehumanizing; “gay people” is more neutral. I didn’t want to make any sweeping changes without consensus, especially on an FA. +1; Template:Xt should be avoided. For the record I see no such problem with Template:Xt. –RoxySaunders 🏳️‍⚧️ (talk • stalk) 02:09, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
That’s generally for BLPs though. I don’t think every instance of ‘homosexual’ needs to be changed. The term with respect to labelling people refers to sexual attraction, not activity. Zenomonoz (talk) 04:57, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Do you have any references for that? WP:GAY? and several of the independent style guides cited there state that “homosexual” should generally only be used for “descriptions of sexual activity or clinical orientation”. In this article, “homosexual” is frequently used to label people and groups of people outside of those contexts. There is also no indication that the guideline is only for BLPs. I don't agree with this change. The wording in the article, which I wrote in 2009, mirrors the sources. People used different language because the concepts were different in 1969. They are still changing and the language is too.

The sources are the priority to follow, not WP:GAY. WP:GAY is referring to language for current issues, not historic purposes. Moni3 (talk) 17:05, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
