Guild of Copy Editors cleanup

I am handling the copy edit for this article. As I read through the article, I will make minor changes to it directly. I will list lots of other suggestions here on the "Talk" page. Feel free to comment on any suggestion or to ignore any suggestion.

You can also (slowly and carefully) make changes to the article based upon a suggestion while I am still copy editing (approximately 3-4 days to complete). --LukasMatt (talk) 22:41, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

The Fundamental Problem

This article has an identity crisis. Its title says "Sriperumbudur". The first sentence of its lead paragraph says "Sriperumbudur is a city". However, a large portion of the article concerns "Sriperumbudur taluk".

Unfortunately, an article about "Sriperumbudur taluk" already exists.

Somebody (an expert from the WikiProject India) needs to make a decision about the two articles "Sriperumbudur" and "Sriperumbudur taluk".

My suggestion:

  • keep both articles
  • move anything not directly related to the village "Sriperumbudur" from the "Sriperumbudur" article to the "Sriperumbudur taluk" article
  • when the "Sriperumbudur taluk" article contains too much information about a specific village, create a new article about the village

Infobox

Suggestions for Infobox

For the "subdivision_name" parameter, why is the {{flagu}} template used? In the entire article, there is no direct wikilink to the article "India". Why not use {{flag}} instead?

Problems with "population_total" and "population_as_of" parameters:

  • Outdated. A census was conducted in 2011, but the Infobox shows the population in 2008
  • My research on the Internet found the population of Sriperumbudur to be approximately 20,000, not 200,000
[Note: A separate Wiki article exists for Sriperumbudur taluk.]

"population_rank" parameter:

Problems with "website" parameter:

  • the link does not work properly
  • Even if the link worked properly, it only shows a map of villages in the Sriperumbudur taluk. This article is about the city of Sriperumbudur, which is only one village within the taluk. I suggest deleting the "website" parameter until a separate website exists for the city of Sriperumbudur.

Lead section

Suggestions for Lead section

Deleted Template:Quotation

Reasons:
  • The distance to Chennai has already been stated in the lead section
  • sounds like advertising

Removed because the link in the citation is dead: Template:Quotation

--LukasMatt (talk) 00:38, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

History

This article does not contain a "History" section. According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities#History, a "History" section is compulsory.

Economy

This section could discuss Bangalore Chennai Expressway.

Deletions from former "Industry" section

Removed this sentence Template:Quotation

Reason: advertising

Removed this URL because it is dead: Template:Quotation

Removed this sentence and its citation Template:Quotation

Reasons:
  • exaggeration and advertising
  • the link is dead

Government and politics

Removed Template:Quotation

Reason: It is outdated and not necessary because many wikilinks exist to support this section.

--LukasMatt (talk) 10:43, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Demographics

Removed the entire section Template:Quotation

Reasons:
  • The most recent census was conducted in 2011. The Infobox has population figures from 2008. Therefore, the 2001 statistics in this section are outdated. (Before providing numbers for this section, see the "Talk" section above "The Fundamental Problem".)
  • According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities#Demographics, the "Demographics" section is "Very Important", but not compulsory

Culture

Removed Template:Quotation

Reason: While interesting, this article concerns Sriperumbudur primarily and, in this case, "Sri Adikesava Perumal Temple and the birthplace of Saint Ramanuja" secondarily. The removed information is better included in the article "Ramanuja" or the article "Vaishnavism".
