Controversy over ‘‘Mo’ Better Blues’’ (1990)
Lee’s 1990 film ‘‘Mo’ Better Blues’’ drew criticism from several Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), for its portrayal of two Jewish nightclub owners, Moe and Josh Flatbush. Critics argued that the characters perpetuated long-standing antisemitic stereotypes, depicting Jewish businessmen as exploitative and greedy. The ADL stated that the film “dredges up an age-old and highly dangerous form of antisemitic stereotyping” and expressed disappointment given Lee’s record of challenging racial bias in cinema.Script error: No such module "citation/CS1".
In response, Lee published an op-ed in ‘‘The New York Times’’ titled ‘‘I Am Not an Anti-Semite’’ (August 22, 1990), in which he defended his creative choices. He argued, “Not every Black person is a pimp, murderer, prostitute, convict, rapist, or drug addict, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood from writing these roles,” and asserted that it was unfair to hold him to a higher moral standard than other filmmakers. He added that requiring all Jewish characters to be portrayed positively was “unrealistic and unfair.”Script error: No such module "citation/CS1".
Lee’s response generated further debate. Some commentators found his defense troubling, suggesting that it deflected rather than addressed the concerns, and invoked a whataboutism argument centered on anti-Black portrayals in Hollywood. Others noted that, unlike characters of other ethnic backgrounds in his films, Jewish characters rarely received sympathetic or multidimensional treatment, especially in his earlier work. Later films, such as ‘‘BlacKkKlansman’’ (2018), were seen by some as presenting more nuanced Jewish characters, though the controversy surrounding ‘‘Mo’ Better Blues’’ remains an important and unresolved chapter in Lee’s career.Script error: No such module "citation/CS1". - File:Red question icon with gradient background.svg Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Day Creature (talk) 03:12, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
- An interesting and high-effort first user contribution. The only thing left is to make the presented references into proper citations. You could make a sandbox page and revise them, but then boldly add the section onto the Mo' Better Blues article itself. Maybe the article for the film has more relevance than the article for its director...or maybe you could retitle the section to "Antisemitism accusations" for this article instead. I propose adding a new subsection under the “Controversies” section titled “Antisemitism accusations,” covering the backlash to Spike Lee's 1990 film Mo’ Better Blues. The draft is neutral, fully sourced, and ready to be added.
Here is my sandbox version with proper citations: User:Jacobgoldman007/sandbox
Please review and consider adding it to the article. Thank you! Jacobgoldman007 (talk) 03:13, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
