Strait

What's the difference between a strait and a sound? NATO.Caliber (talk) 08:33, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Two "sounds" in Ontario, Canada are Owen Sound and Perry Sound. They are cities situated on a "large bay". It seems to meet the definition given. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wmckiern (talkcontribs) 20:24, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oresund

I've never heard this usage, and it sounds pretty limited (especially since it refers to an area outside the English-speaking world). I'm not saying it's not true, but I think it's too broad a statement to be the first paragraph of the article. For example, in the Northeast United States, "The Sound" refers to the Long Island Sound. I suggest this paragraph be dropped or moved to the bottomn. Thoughts?113.22.26.36 (talk) 14:22, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. "The Sound" is used colloquially for whichever "sound" the speaker is most familiar with, not just the Oresund. 68.77.95.64 (talk) 02:20, 25 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
"The Sound" is the English language name for Öresund in International Maritime Law (dating back to at least the Copenhagen Convention of 1857, which is recognized as international law). I've added a reference for it. Thomas.W (talk) 19:22, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I still think you need to link the disambiguation pages for the two terms (The Sound and Sund) to better indicate how common this is. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 07:53, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Larger than a bay?

This doesn't seem to make a ton of sense. Take Hudson's bay, Bay of Bengal, etc. These bays seem to indicate that there are no limits to the size of a 'bay', so to say that a sound is strictly larger than a bay appears false. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.67.121.86 (talk) 05:00, 31 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
