Use of sources in classification of Slovenian cuisine

Questioning use of sources for “Balkan” classification of Slovenian cuisine

Hello, I’d like to raise a concern regarding the sources currently being cited to support the claim that Slovenian cuisine is Balkan. Two references in particular appear to be either irrelevant or misinterpreted:

Zlatko Skrbiš, Long-Distance Nationalism

This book deals with diasporic identity and nationalism among Slovenian and Croatian communities in Australia. It does not discuss Slovenian cuisine at all. Using it to support culinary classification is inappropriate and violates WP:V and WP:SYNTH.

Ana Tominc (2023), Between the Balkans and Central Europe

This article does focus on Slovenian cuisine, but it actually argues the opposite of what’s being claimed. It shows how Slovenian culinary elites and celebrity chefs (e.g. Valentina and Luka Novak) have worked to frame Slovenian cuisine as Central European, deliberately distancing it from any Balkan association. Citing this article to argue for a Balkan culinary identity is a misrepresentation of the source and violates WP:NOR and WP:SYN.


Given these issues, I propose that either:

The claim that Slovenian cuisine is Balkan be removed, or A balanced explanation be added, making it clear that Slovenian culinary identity is contested, and that many prominent voices in Slovenia have positioned it within Central Europe, particularly in the post-socialist and EU-accession context (as Tominc documents).
