Genre
Yes, it is obvious that they are indie rock but alternative rock as a single genre does not describe them. I would fit them into the post-punk category. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.203.146.98 (talk) 21:20, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
- allmusic lists them as:
- # Punk-Pop
- # Emo
- # Punk Revival
- Please discuss. π₰₯ ĬLʡ$Φǚɭђµπt₴ŗ ₯₰π 23:17, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'll discuss. I changed their genre to those three today. Alternative Rock had a ref listed, but it was allmusic and that page says nothing of alternative rock. I think those three genres fit them nicely, unlike alternative rock. --icorey (talk) 21:41, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Genre was removed from the musician infoboxes, so I took the genres we had listed and moved them to the style section. I figure no one has any objections, because I wrote the style section and I put the infobox genres in the article to begin with :) --icorey (talk) 01:48, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
They aren't post punk. post punk describes joy division, gang of four etc. They are a combination of indie rock and emo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.185.209.96 (talk) 15:49, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Racial / Religious views?
I think some of the lyrics express some controversial religious views, and touch on racial issues as well - are there any sources (interviews, etc.) about this that could shed on the band's views? Rycanada (talk) 16:26, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
I added some links to interviews and a couple other articles. The band members aren't philosophers or diplomats, so no one is asking them about racial and religious views (IMO, they should continue that trend). But in the rockmidgets interview, Coby says something to the tune of "they're just words." --icorey (talk) 22:51, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Jewish Origins
I was reading this and wonder if their Jewish origins should be mentioned in the Wikipedia article. It might be an interesting treat for listeners of this band that are Jewish, like myself. But then again I can help shaking the suspicion that this might attract religious bias towards the article (but then again that could be said for all the articles reference anything religious in them). 76.105.205.97 (talk) 07:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Keeping in mind that they're not a Jewish band, what do other bands' articles say on similar matters? --icorey (talk) 03:43, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- I gave this some more thought. Max and Coby met at Camp Ramah and that's mentioned. That seems sufficient as far as their origins go, since it's pretty unlikely that they got together and thought, "let's make a Jewish band." However, I think the style section was lacking a discussion of the band's Jewish-themed lyrics, which AFAIK is pretty unique, so I added a paragraph on that. --icorey (talk) 06:25, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, is Max Bemis Jewish? He's a pretty avowed Holocaust denier. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.34.100.113 (talk) 21:49, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- If only that were true and not a myth perpetuated by angry punknews.org users. --icorey (talk) 04:17, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Complete bullshit, yes. The song "Alive with the Glory of Love" is about the Holocaust. Maxwells.plum (talk) 22:36, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Max Bemis is quite Jewish, really, and many of the band's songs deal with that background. The album Say Anything, originally to be titled This Is Forever, is largely about God and religion, and no doubt from a primarily Jewish perspective, although Bemis is no longer the group's sole songwriter. The chorus to one of the leaked songs, "Cemetary," goes something like, "When we die/We'll ascend to someplace way up high," and the song "Ahhh, Men," to say nothing of the title being a pun on "amen," seems to be addressed to God in parts. Maxwells.plum (talk) 22:41, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Too much fluff?
The following is an example:
"Say Anything are unique in being one of the few bands who have actually escaped the often confining labeling of emo due to being highly experimental in nature."
- That doesn't even make sense. And it has some British English going on there in an otherwise American English article. --icorey (talk) 17:24, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Associated acts
Reinstated Kenny Vasoli on the current members roster until official news otherwise. This was in accord with the article main text which listed Vasoli as bassist. The (On Tour) thing after his name should be removed because technically all the members except for Bemis, Linder, and Kent were only tour members, as they did not play on the actual records (Kent did not play on ...Is a Real Boy, but he did play on the following records until his departure). So it is difficult to call Vasoli a touring member when the majority of the band are basically permanent touring members. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.140.74.182 (talk) 21:53, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Added all associated acts in this order:
- Max's side projects (Two Tongues, Painful Splits, Perma)
- Other current members' side projects (Turner twins in XO, Jeff in They're Ghouls)
- Other current members' previous bands (Parker in JamisonParker and Jake in Safety in Numbers)
- Bands with some on no member overlap that are seen not as side projects, but as touring buddies, etc. (STD were a huge influence on Max and they're often mentioned in the same breath; Andy was in SA and HRC; Sherri from Eisley is in Perma and is Max's wife)
I thought about adding the Starting Line but had to draw the line... Total of 10 acts. Please discuss before changing. Would consider cutting off the last group of three bands Maxwells.plum (talk) 19:24, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
